GODLY INHERITANCE (2)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Acknowledging the sins of our forefathers

a) Children and grandchildren benefit from the character and achievements of their parents. They also suffer the consequences of their sins and weaknesses. Medical problems, physical features and personality traits can be passed on by both parents but on the destructive consequences of sin are primarily passed on by the fathers.

b) For these reasons, the Scripture teaches the need to acknowledge the sins of our fathers.

i) 20 We acknowledge our wickedness, Lordand the guilt of our ancestors; we have indeed sinned against you. (Jeremiah 14:20 NIV)

ii) 6 We have sinned, even as our ancestors did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly. (Psalms 106:6 NIV)

c) When we become Christian, we are forgiven of all our sin; the curse of the law and the death sentence due to us. Jesus bore all our sins and iniquities upon the cross.

i) 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. 25 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement,  through the shedding of his blood—to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished. (Romans 3:23-25 NIV)

d) However, the reality of those inherited physical, psychological and spiritual weakness and tendencies must be recognized. A battle plan must be put in place to overcome these inherited weaknesses. This is done by the daily disciplines of walking in God's Spirit. Constant limitations must be placed on us and our children. Actually these limitations should be standards that every godly person should have.
