DIVINE REST (3)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Fasting
a) There are 5 specific times when it is wise to fast:
i) One day a week.
ii) When there is a need for humility before God.
iii) When faced with humanly impossible situation.
iv) When there is a need for God's guidance.
v) When there is an illness or a need to maintain our health.
b) Research by Dr. George Thampy, a biochemist at the university of Indiana, on 60 healthy adults who participated in a 3 weeks' fast revealed the following results:
i) Significant lowering of cholesterol.
ii) Lowering of blood pressure.
iii) Relief from arthritis.
iv) Loss of body mass and weight (as much as 40 lbs).
c) Those who broke fast and maintained vegetarian diet did not regain much weight. But those who abruptly switched to their normal diet regained much weight (as much as 15 lbs) during their first week of re-feeding.
d) According to Dr. James and Phyllisa Balch, fasting is an effective and safe method of helping the body detoxify itself. In fact, fasting is recommended for any sickness as it gives the body the rest it needed to recover. By fasting regularly, we give all our organs a rest and thus help reverse the aging process and live a longer and healthier life.
e) The benefits of fasting includes the following:
i) The natural process of toxin excretion continues, which the influx of new toxin is reduced. This results in a reduction of total body toxicity and therefore speeds up the healing process.
ii) The energy usually used for digestion is redirected to the immune function, cell growth and eliminatory process.
iii) The immune system's workload is greatly reduced and the digestive tract is spared of any inflammation due to allergic reactions to food.
iv) Fat stored chemicals such as pesticides and drugs are released.
v) Physical awareness and sensitivity to diet and surroundings are increased.
vi) An efficient way of overcoming dependence on recreational drugs such as coffee, tobacco and alcohol.
vii) Empties the digestive tract and disposes of putrefactive bacteria.
viii) Restores the youthful condition of the cells and tissues and rejuvenates the body.
f) There are some people who should not fast unless they have a qualified health personnel to regulate them:
i) Pregnant and lactating women.
ii) Hardening of the liver.
iii) Diabetics.
