THE INSPIRATION & AUTHORITY (1)

1. Introduction

a) The Bible is full of wonderful stories and special truth. What we want to do is to discover the Bible.  

b) Psalm 119:11 says, "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You." 

c) Nurture and grow your understanding of the Bible as you read and discover the Bible.

 2. Its claim for itself

a) 2 Timothy 3:14-17 New International Version (NIV)

¹⁴ But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, ¹⁵ and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. ¹⁶ All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, ¹⁷ so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

i) "God-breathed" - "inspired."

ii) Man did not create; he only transcribed!

b) 1 Peter 1:10-12 New International Version (NIV)

¹⁰ Concerning this salvation, the prophets, who spoke of the grace that was to come to you, searched intently and with the greatest care, ¹¹ trying to find out the time and circumstances to which the Spirit of Christ in them was pointing when he predicted the sufferings of the Messiah and the glories that would follow. ¹² It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

i) ... And men transcribed, not knowing fully the full meaning of what they wrote! Yet, the prophets knew they were writing for us!

c) Other claims 

i) Psalm 19:7-11 New International Version (NIV) 

⁷ The law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
⁸ The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.
⁹ The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.

    than much pure gold;

ii) Psalm 37:29-31 New International Version (NIV)

²⁹ The righteous will inherit the land
    and dwell in it forever. 

³⁰ The mouths of the righteous utter wisdom,

    and their tongues speak what is just.
³¹ The law of their God is in their hearts;
    their feet do not slip.

iv) Isaiah 40:6-8 New International Version (NIV)

    because the breath of the Lord blows on them.
