What Does It Mean?

Faith is one of the most essential and precious gifts a believer can possess. It is not something we can manufacture on our own, nor is it the power of positive thinking or self-will. It is a gift from God, given to us through His grace. But the Bible also teaches that faith can grow and increase. One of the primary ways faith is strengthened is by hearing and reading the Word of God. Romans 10:17 declares, "Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ." This means that faith is not generated by human effort or positive thinking but by the intake of God's Word. When we hear the gospel preached, read the Scriptures, and study the teachings of Christ, our faith is nourished and grows.

Since Christ Himself is the Word of God (John 1:1), and the Word of God points us to Christ, reading the Bible is a direct means of encountering Jesus. As we read of His life, His teachings, His death, and His resurrection, our trust in Him deepens. Faith is not a one-time event but a living, growing relationship with God, and it is sustained and strengthened through the Word.

Faith is also not something we achieve but something we receive. It is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8). We cannot earn it, work for it, or will ourselves into believing. It is given to us by grace. But we are called to respond to that gift by nurturing it, and one way we do that is by feeding on the Word. James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for wisdom—a wisdom that is rooted in trust and faith. If we lack faith, we can ask God for it, and He will give it generously.

Furthermore, faith involves trusting in Jesus even though we cannot see Him today. John 20:29 records Jesus' words to Thomas: "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." This is a blessing for all believers who have not seen Christ physically but trust in Him through the testimony of Scripture and the work of the Holy Spirit. If you trust in Jesus, you already possess faith. Without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6).

Paul explains that we are justified by faith and have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1-2). We are children of God through faith (Galatians 3:26), and as believers, we stand by faith (Romans 11:20). Our faith is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:17). It is the foundation of our relationship with God and the means by which we receive His grace.

The Twist

The twist is that faith, while a gift from God, is also something that must be exercised and grown. It is not a one-time deposit that we receive and forget. It is like a muscle that must be strengthened through use. And one of the primary ways it is strengthened is by hearing and reading the Word of God. The more we expose ourselves to God's truth, the more our faith deepens.

Even more striking is that faith is not a feeling but a conviction. It does not always come with emotional excitement or certainty. It is a confident assurance in what we hope for and the certainty of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1). It is trusting God's character and His promises, even when our circumstances seem contrary.

The most profound truth is that faith is both a gift and a responsibility. God gives us the gift of faith, but we are responsible for nurturing it. We cannot grow in faith without intentionally feeding on the Word, praying, and trusting God in the trials of life. Faith is not passive; it is active and living.

What Can I Learn?

First, faith comes from hearing the Word of God. Reading the Bible, listening to sermons, and studying the Scriptures are essential for growing our faith. If we neglect the Word, our faith will weaken.

Second, faith is a gift from God. It is not something we can earn or produce on our own. We must humble ourselves and receive it with gratitude.

Third, faith grows through trust. Even though we cannot see Jesus physically, we can trust Him through His Word and His Spirit. Our faith is blessed because we believe without seeing.

Fourth, faith justifies us. It is through faith that we are declared righteous before God. Our relationship with God is based on faith, not on our works. Faith gives us peace with God and access to His grace.

Fifth, faith is essential for pleasing God. Without faith, we cannot please Him. We must trust Him, obey Him, and rely on Him in all things.

How Does It Apply to Me?

Examine your intake of the Word. Are you reading the Bible regularly? Are you hearing the gospel preached and taught? If your faith is weak, it may be because you are not feeding on the Word. Commit to daily Bible reading and study.

Examine your trust in Jesus. Do you believe in Him even though you cannot see Him? Is your faith rooted in the truth of Scripture and the testimony of the Spirit? Ask God to deepen your trust.

Examine your dependence on God. Are you relying on your own efforts or on God's grace? Faith is not about self-sufficiency but about dependence on God. Surrender your efforts and trust in Him.

Examine your view of faith. Do you see it as a gift or as a human achievement? Humble yourself and receive it as a gift from God. Thank Him for the faith He has given you and ask Him to increase it.

Examine your prayer life. Are you asking God for faith? If you lack faith, ask Him for it. He gives generously to those who ask.

Final Reflections

Who is God in relation to faith? He is the Giver of faith, the Author and Perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). He is the One who reveals Himself through His Word and draws us to trust in Him. He is the One who justifies us by faith and gives us peace with Himself. He is the One who calls us to believe, to trust, and to live by faith.

This is the God we trust. He is not distant or indifferent. He has given us His Word, His Spirit, and His Son, so that we might have faith and grow in it. He invites us to come to Him, to hear His Word, and to believe.

Let us read His Word. Let us hear His voice. Let us trust in Him. And let us grow in faith, knowing that He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion.

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of faith. We thank You that faith comes by hearing Your Word and that You reveal Yourself to us through Scripture. Forgive us for the times we have neglected Your Word and allowed our faith to grow weak.

Lord, help us to increase our faith. Give us a hunger for Your Word and a love for hearing it preached and taught. Let the message of Christ dwell in us richly.

We thank You that we are justified by faith and that we have peace with You through Jesus Christ. Help us to stand firm in this faith and to trust You even when we cannot see.
