BEATITUDES: THOSE WHO ARE PERSECUTED
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. The Beatitudes
a) In Matthew 5:1-12, the term "beatitude" means a state of great blessedness, or a saying that expresses that state. Blessedness is more than happiness.
b) These beatitudes lay down certain conditions in which God will give us his blessing and peace — an abiding joy not subject to the changing fortunes of this world. Blessedness is bestowed by God intentionally and purposefully, and it is sought from God in the same manner.
c) We must seek blessedness. It won't just “happen.”
2. Those Who Are Persecuted
Matthew 5:10-12
"Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."
a) God will take vengeance on those who mistreat others, whatever the motives or reasons. But he has special regard for those who are trying to do his will and who suffer persecution because of it.
b) "If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. If anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not feel ashamed, but glorify God in that name. Let those who suffer according to the will of God entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right" (1 Peter 4:12-19).
