PETER ANSWERED THE CROWD: REPENT & BE BAPTIZED
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. The Crowd Asked Peter
a) After Peter preached on the Day of Pentecost, the crowd asked the apostles, 'Brethren, What shall we do?'
Acts 2:37-40
37 Now when they heard this, they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brethren, what shall we do?” 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself.” 40 And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, “Be saved from this perverse generation!”
2. Peter Answered The Crowd
Acts 2:38
38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
a) Peter answered the listeners’ question by telling them what to do. He also told them what the result would be: forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
b) Did Peter tell them that they could contribute nothing to their salvation? No, he said that they should repent and be baptized toward their forgiveness. When they did that, they contributed to their salvation, didn't they? If they had refused, they wouldn't have been saved, would they?
c) This doesn't mean that they earned their salvation. A person ought to repent of sin. They owed it to God, and God owed nothing to them. As for baptism, it was not payment for the forgiveness of sins. Christ’s death was the entire payment, we all know that.
d) When Jeremiah was stuck in the mud down at the bottom of that cistern (Jeremiah 38:10-13) his rescuers lowered ropes and rags, and told him, "Put these rags under your armpits to protect you from the ropes." So Jeremiah did what they said and they pulled him out.
e) Jeremiah never could have got out of there by himself, yet he had to co-operate and contribute some action himself, in order to be rescued. Yet nothing he did was a payment for his rescue. That was free.
f) So is what happened on the day of Pentecost reflected in the statement, “My only contribution to my salvation is my own sin” No, in fact it is contradicted.
g) Three thousand people listened to the word, believed it was true, asked what to do, and did what they were told. Without that, they would not have been saved. So they contributed to their salvation. They took part in it.
