The Price of the Church

Why the church? Because Jesus Christ died on the cross for her. He paid for it with His blood and His broken body. This is the foundation of everything we are and everything we do. The church is not a human institution; it is the purchase of God. It is not a social organization; it is the body of Christ. It is not a building or a program; it is a people for whom the Son of God gave His life. When we understand this, we understand why the church matters. It matters because it cost God everything. It matters because it is His treasure. It matters because He died to make it His own.

The Called-Out Ones

The church is the called-out ones, the people who are separated and different from the world. The Greek word ekklesia means "a called-out assembly." It refers to those who have been summoned out of darkness into light, out of bondage into freedom, out of death into life. The church is not defined by its building or its programs; it is defined by its calling. We are a people who have been set apart for God. We are a people who live by different values, who pursue different goals, and who serve a different Master. And because we are called out, we are not to be like the world. We are to be distinct, holy, and devoted to God.

The 5-Fold Ministry for the Church

God has given the five-fold ministry—the apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher—for the church. Not the church for the five-fold ministry. This is an important distinction. The ministry gifts are servants of the church, not masters over it. They are given to equip the saints, to build up the body, and to prepare God's people for works of service. They are not meant to be lords over the flock but shepherds who care for the sheep. When the ministry gifts serve the church, the church grows. When the church serves the ministry gifts, it becomes distorted. The purpose of leadership is not to build the leader's platform; it is to build the body of Christ.

The Church Is About People

The church is not about buildings, ministries, or social works, though they are necessary for kingdom building. The church is about people. Christianity is all about relationship with God and with man. The buildings are just structures; the people are the temple. The programs are just tools; the people are the purpose. The social works are just expressions; the people are the heart. When we focus on the people, we are focusing on what God values most. When we focus on anything else, we are missing the point.

Missing the Mark

If we are swerved from this focus, we have missed the mark. And that is sin, missing the mark. When the church becomes more about buildings and programs than about people, we have lost our way. When we become more concerned with appearances than with spiritual health, we have drifted from God's purposes. When we prioritize the preferences of people over the presence of God, we have fallen into error. The church is not a business to be run; it is a family to be loved. It is not an organization to be managed; it is a body to be nourished. And when we forget this, we are no longer the church that Jesus died for.

The Danger of Playing Church

Then we begin to play church. We put much emphasis upon material things and programs rather than the spiritual well-being of the believers. We begin to act like the world and not according to God's highest standards. The end result is that people are disillusioned and they leave church. They come looking for God and find only religious activity. They come seeking meaning and find only empty ritual. They come longing for community and find only performance. And they walk away, not because they do not want God, but because they cannot find Him in the place where He is supposed to be.

The Purpose of Signs and Wonders

Why does God allow signs and wonders, even the nine spiritual gifts? Because He wants people to know firstly that He is God Almighty and secondly to draw the unsaved to Him. The signs are not for show; they are for salvation. The wonders are not for entertainment; they are for witness. The gifts are not for status; they are for service. Everything God does is motivated by His love for people. He wants them to know Him. He wants them to be saved. He wants them to experience His power and His grace. The spiritual gifts are tools for this purpose. They are not an end in themselves; they are means to an end. And that end is that people would come to know God.

God's Interest in People

Looking at all these, it is clear that God is very much interested in people and nothing else. The buildings will decay. The programs will fade. The ministries will change. But people are eternal. People are the objects of God's love. People are the reason Jesus died. People are the purpose of the church. God is not interested in our religious performances; He is interested in our hearts. He is not impressed with our programs; He is moved by our love. He is not looking for our achievements; He is looking for our surrender. And when we align our focus with His, we become the church He intended us to be.

Final Reflection

Why the church? Because Jesus died for her. Because she is His beloved. Because she is the vessel of His presence, the witness of His grace, and the instrument of His purposes. Let us never forget that the church is about people. Let us never trade the treasure of souls for the trinkets of religious activity. Let us love people as He loved them. Let us serve them as He served them. Let us build them up as He builds us. And let us be the church that Jesus died for.

Prayer for the Church

Lord, help me to see the church as You see it. Help me to value people the way You value them. Forgive me for the times I have focused on buildings, programs, and activities instead of on the spiritual well-being of Your people. Let me not miss the mark. Let me not play church. Let me love and serve Your people with all my heart. Use me to build up the body of Christ and to draw others to You. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
