What Does It Mean?

The Scriptures progressively reveal a God who is not only supreme in power but also perfect in character. He is the sovereign Lord over all, yet He is also the compassionate Father who draws near to His people. He is both our shield and our portion—our protector and our greatest blessing.

From Deuteronomy 10:17, we learn that God is:

God of gods and Lord of lords: He holds supreme authority over every other power—whether earthly rulers, spiritual forces, or false gods. There is no one above Him.

The great God, mighty and awesome: His power is unmatched, and He inspires reverent fear and wonder. He is not small, tame, or manageable.

Impartial and incorruptible: He shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. You cannot buy His favor with wealth, status, or religious performance. He judges fairly and loves justly.

From Psalm 116:5, we see the character of God:

Gracious: God gives us what we do not deserve—mercy, forgiveness, and countless blessings poured out freely. His grace is unearned and unending.

Righteous: God always does what is right. His actions are perfectly just, morally pure, and consistent with His holy nature. There is no darkness or injustice in Him.

Full of compassion: God is not cold or distant. He is deeply moved by our suffering. He feels our pain and responds with tender love and care. His compassion is not a passive emotion but an active force that moves Him to help.

From Psalm 144:15, we learn the blessing of knowing God:

Blessed are the people whose God is the LORD: True blessedness—lasting happiness, fulfillment, and security—is not found in wealth, status, or possessions. It is found in a relationship with the living God. To have God as your God is the greatest blessing possible.

From Proverbs 30:5, we see the reliability of God and His Word:

Every word of God is flawless: God's Word is pure, true, and perfectly reliable. There is no error, no deception, no mixture of falsehood. What He says, He will do.

He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him: God is not passive. He actively protects and defends those who trust in Him. Taking refuge in God means running to Him in times of trouble, hiding in His presence, and trusting in His protection.

The Twist

The twist is that this great, mighty, and awesome God—who is so far above us that we cannot fully comprehend Him—is also gracious, compassionate, and a shield for His people. The same God who accepts no bribes and shows no partiality is the God who freely gives grace to the undeserving and compassion to the broken. God's Word Is Flawless and Reliable: Every word God speaks is true. You can build your life on His promises. When He says He will protect you, He will. When He says He will forgive you, He will. When He says He will never leave you, He will not. His Word is a sure foundation in an unstable world.

True Blessedness Is Found in God Alone: The greatest blessing is not health, wealth, or success—it is knowing God as your God. If you have Him, you have everything. If you do not have Him, you have nothing of lasting value. This reorients our priorities and satisfies our deepest longings.

How Does It Apply to Me?

In Your View of God: Do you see God as gracious or harsh? Compassionate or distant? The truth is that He is both mighty and merciful, both great and good. Let this truth shape your trust in Him. You can approach Him not with fear of rejection but with confidence in His compassion.

In Times of Trouble: God is a shield to those who take refuge in Him. Are you running to Him in your difficulties, or are you trying to protect yourself? Take refuge in His presence. He is not indifferent to your struggles—He is your defender and protector.

In Your Pursuit of Happiness: Where are you seeking blessedness? In your career? Your relationships? Your possessions? These things will disappoint. True and lasting blessedness is found only in God. Make knowing Him your highest pursuit, and everything else will fall into its proper place.

In Your Trust in Scripture: Do you truly believe that every word of God is flawless? When you read the Bible, do you receive it as the perfect, trustworthy word of the living God? Let the reliability of Scripture be the anchor of your faith. Build your life on what God has said, not on what the world says.

Thank You that You are gracious and full of compassion. Thank You that You do not treat us as our sins deserve but pour out Your mercy upon us. Thank You that Your every word is flawless and that You are a shield to those who trust in You.
