God Sees You

A 5-Minute Devotional for Busy People

Minute 1: The Hook

You feel invisible.

Not the poetic kind of invisible — the kind where you're pouring yourself out and no one seems to notice. The kind where you show up early, stay late, and watch someone else get the credit. The kind where your grief is quiet, your struggle is private, and your name doesn't make the prayer list because nobody knows you're breaking.

You've mastered the art of holding it together. The smile is polished. The "I'm fine" is automatic. And somewhere along the way, you started to believe that if people don't see you, maybe God doesn't either.

After all, if you were important, wouldn't someone have noticed by now?

Minute 2: The Scripture

Read Genesis 16:13 (ESV):

"So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, 'You are a God of seeing,' for she said, 'Truly here I have seen him who looks after me.'

This isn't a queen speaking. This is Hagar — a servant, cast out, pregnant, alone in the wilderness. No Instagram following. No platform. No one looking for her. And yet she becomes the first person in Scripture to give God a name.

Minute 3: The Twist

Here's the twist that will stop your striving:

God doesn't see you because you're visible. He sees you because you're His.

Hagar wasn't in the temple when God found her. She was in the desert, running from her problems, hiding from her mistakes, convinced her story was over. And the Angel of the Lord didn't show up to scold her for fleeing. He showed up to see her — and to speak a future over her son that she couldn't have imagined.

The Hebrew name she gives God is El Roi — "the God who sees." But the word roi doesn't just mean "to glance at." It means to observe with care, to inspect, to look after with full attention. This isn't a casual scroll. This is the focused gaze of Someone who is actively watching over every detail of your hidden life.

But here's what changes everything: Being seen by God doesn't always mean your wilderness ends immediately. Hagar still had to walk back. She still had to face the mess. But she walked back knowing something no one could take from her — "I have seen the One who looks after me."

We think being seen means being rescued from the desert. God says being seen means being accompanied through it. The world needs you to be impressive to count you. God only needs you to be His.

Minute 4: The Practice

Five minutes. Three moves. Right now.

Stop performing for an audience of thousands. Whisper: "El Roi, You see me here." Say it until your shoulders drop. You don't have to trend to matter.

Name the hidden thing. The worry, the shame, the dream you haven't told anyone. God already sees it. Stop hiding it from the One who is looking right at it — and right at you — with love.

Let one small act be enough today. You don't need a viral moment. You need a faithful one. Send the text. Make the meal. Show up. Do it knowing the only eyes that ultimately matter are already on you — and they are kind.

Minute 5: The Prayer

Lord, I've been exhausted from trying to be seen by everyone else. I've measured my worth by likes, by recognition, by whether anyone noticed I was drowning. But Hagar met You in the desert — invisible, ashamed, and running — and You saw her. You see me now. Not to expose my failure, but to look after my soul. I don't need the whole world to know my name. I just need to know that Yours is El Roi — the God who sees me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
