COVENANT INSTITUTED: A UNIQUE MEDIATOR

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Covenant Instituted

a) We see that the new covenant came through a unique mediator, from a unilateral origin, with universal application.

b) Definitions:

i) Unique: One of a kind. There is no other like Jesus.

ii) Unilateral: One sided. God did not negotiate his covenant. He made it without any help from his created beings.

iii) Universal: For the whole wide world, all humankind.

2. A Unique Mediator

a) The main point in a correct understanding of the the new covenant is that Jesus Christ "has obtained a more excellent ministry, because he is the mediator of a better covenant, which is based on better promises" (Hebrews 8:6-8).

b) Humanity got at odds with God. Humanity was helpless to reverse that situation. So God had a plan. His unique Son would become man, and would mediate a covenant to humankind. He would shed his blood as a unique sacrifice without which there could be no such covenant.

c) Jesus said,"This is my blood of the covenant, to be shed for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:28).

The End ...
