MESSIAH: WHO IS HE?
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Messiah
a) Understanding the Messiah or Christ is the first and foremost requirement for spiritual enlightenment. Paul makes a most comprehensive statement of who and what Christ is.
b) The two titles, Messiah and Christ, are synonymous and interchangeable. “Messiah” is the Hebrew for which “Christ” is the Greek equivalent. The basic meaning of these titles is The Anointed One.
2. Who Is He?
Colossians 1:12-20
12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.
13 For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities — all things have been created through Him and for Him. 17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. 18 He is also head of the body, the church; and He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that He Himself will come to have first place in everything. 19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.
a) These few verses contain one of the most comprehensive yet concise descriptions of Christ in the Bible.
b) The main points that Paul makes are:
i) He is the beloved Son of God the Father.
ii) He is King of the kingdom of God.
iii) We have redemption and forgiveness in him.
iv) He is the image of God, the invisible God made manifest.
v) He is the firstborn from the dead of all creation.
vi) All things were created by him and for him.
vii) He exists before all things.
viii) He holds all things together.
ix) He is the head of the church.
x) He is the beginning (the forerunner).
xi) He has first place in everything.
xii) He has done his Father’s good pleasure.
xiii) All the fullness (of deity) dwells in him.
xiv) Reconciliation to God is made possible through his blood.
The End ...
