WALLS

1. Prophetic Walking

a) On 23rd September 2016 early in the morning, as I was doing my routine walking exercise around a small field near my house, I sensed that the Lord telling me to walk around the same manner 7 times. My standard routine is only 5 times. Then I was reminded in the Book of Joshua about the first battle of the Israelites after crossing Jordan River, the battle of Jericho. The walls of Jericho fell after Joshua's army marched around the city blowing their trumpets 7th day but this time in the same manner 7 times.

b) It's prophetic!

"It dawns on me that the walls of (a city) shall fall. Whatever the scheming, the Lord will destroy with one blow, he won't need to strike twice! (Nahum 1:9). The walls in (a city) shall fall as (a city) is for the Lord. The whole (a country) shall follow suit! But all the silver and gold and articles of bronze and iron are holy unto the Lord; they shall go into the treasury of the Lord (Joshua 6:19)."

2. Walled Cities

a) In ancient times, the difference between a "city" and "town" was that cities were usually surrounded by walls while towns were often just "without walls." A massive wall with a few strategically-placed guard towers made a city impregnable. In the Bible, walls were also used for safety and security.

Deuteronomy 3:5
5 All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns.

3. The Walls Of Jericho

a) The original Jericho was located about 5 miles / 8 kilometers west of The Jordan River, and 7 miles / 11 kilometers north of The Dead Sea. At approximately 800 feet / 240 meters below sea level, it has a tropical climate with intense heat in the summer. It had many date-palm trees, which contributed to its also being known as the City of Palms (Deuteronomy 34:3). It was located about 1 mile / 1½ kilometers northwest of the modern-day city of Jericho.

b) When the Israelites crossed the sea at the time of their exodus out of Egypt, the Lord miraculous parted the waters "by a strong east wind" - the "wall" that was created on each side of the driven-back sea was therefore a barrier of water on each side of them.

Exodus 14:21-22
21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 So the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea on the dry ground, and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

c) On their march to their physical promised land, the Israelites encountered numerous walled cities. They conquered them all.

Deuteronomy 3:5
5 All these cities were fortified with high walls, gates, and bars, besides a great many rural towns.

d) Upon their entry into the promised land, perhaps the most famous walls of those ancient times were the walls of Jericho.

Joshua 6:20
20 So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.

4. Rebuilding The Walls Of Jerusalem

a) Upon the Israelite return from the Babylonian captivity in the time of Nehemiah, the first priority was to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem:

Nehemiah 2:17
17 Then I said to them, “You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach.”

5. The Writing On The Wall

i) One of the events of Bible History that became a figure of speech was the The Writing On The Wall:

Daniel 5:5-9
5 In the same hour the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and wrote opposite the lamp-stand on the plaster of the wall of the king’s palace; and the king saw the part of the hand that wrote. 6 Then the king’s countenance changed, and his thoughts troubled him, so that the joints of his hips were loosened and his knees knocked against each other. 7 The king cried aloud to bring in the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers. The king spoke, saying to the wise men of Babylon, “Whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck; and he shall be the third ruler in the kingdom.” 8 Now all the king’s wise men came, but they could not read the writing, or make known to the king its interpretation. 9 Then King Belshazzar was greatly troubled, his countenance was changed, and his lords were astonished.

6. Living In Defiance Of God's Way

a) Walls were also spoken of in a figurative sense, those who live in defiance of God's way are leaving themselves "wide open" to even more evil.

Proverbs 25:28
28 Whoever has no rule over his own spirit
Is like a city broken down, without walls.

7. Breaking Down The Wall

a) The sacrifice that Christ made was not only breaking down the "middle wall of partition" between Israelites and Gentiles, but also the wall between God and humanity as a whole.

Ephesians 2:13-14
13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation.

The End ...
