Introduction

There is a fear that grips the hearts of many believers when they approach God in prayer. It is the fear that their prayers are bouncing off the ceiling. It is the fear that God is not listening. It is the fear that their words are disappearing into the void, unheard and unanswered. It is the fear that they are praying to a God who is distant, disinterested, or deaf. This fear can be paralyzing. It can lead to discouragement, doubt, and even despair. It can cause us to stop praying altogether.

But the Word of God declares a radically different truth. God hears you. He is not distant. He is not disinterested. He is not deaf. He is a God who listens. He is a God who bends His ear toward His children. He is a God who inclines His heart to their cries. He is a God who answers when we call. The prophet Jeremiah declared, "Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know." The Apostle John added, "Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him."

The phrase "and show you great and mighty things" reveals the magnitude of God's response. The Hebrew word for "great" is gadol, which means great, large, or important. The word for "mighty" is batsar, which means inaccessible, hidden, or fortified. It is the same word used to describe the fortified cities of Canaan. The phrase "which you do not know" reveals the condition of our understanding. We do not know what God knows. We do not see what God sees. We do not understand what God understands. The principle of God hearing His people is woven throughout Scripture. When Hagar cried out in the wilderness, God heard her and provided a well (Genesis 21:17). When the Israelites groaned under the bondage of Egypt, God heard their groaning and remembered His covenant (Exodus 2:24). When Hannah wept before the Lord, God heard her and gave her Samuel (1 Samuel 1:10-20). When David cried out to God in the cave, God heard him and delivered him (Psalm 34:6). Second, we believe that God is too busy to hear us. We think that God has more important things to do than listen to our prayers. We think that our problems are too small, too insignificant, or too trivial for God to care about. But this is a lie. God is not too busy. He is not overwhelmed. He is not distracted. He cares about the details of your life. He cares about the little things. He cares about the sparrows that fall to the ground (Matthew 10:29). And He certainly cares about you.

Third, we believe that our sin prevents God from hearing us. We think that because we have sinned, God will not listen to our prayers. We think that our sin has created a barrier between us and God. But this is not true for the believer. Isaiah 59:1-2 says that sin separates us from God. But when we confess our sins, God forgives us and cleanses us (1 John 1:9). Fourth, we confuse God's silence with God's absence. When we do not hear an immediate answer, we assume that God has not heard us. Fifth, we give up too soon. We pray once, twice, three times, and then we stop. We do not persist. But Jesus told a parable about a persistent widow to teach us that we should "always pray and not lose heart" (Luke 18:1). Persistent prayer is not about wearing God down; it is about aligning our hearts with His will. It is about demonstrating our faith and dependence on Him. Do not give up. Keep praying. Keep seeking. Keep knocking. God hears you.

Sixth, we believe that God is annoyed by our prayers. We think that if we pray too much, God will become tired of hearing from us. We think that we are bothering Him. But this is a lie. God is not annoyed by your prayers. He delights in them. He longs for you to come to Him. He invites you to call on Him. He says, "Call to Me, and I will answer you." He is not bothered by your persistence; He is honored by it.
