Introduction

There is a fundamental truth that governs every human life, whether we acknowledge it or not. It is the truth that there are two roads, and they lead to two vastly different destinations. One road leads to life, blessing, and eternal joy in the presence of God. The other road leads to death, cursing, and eternal separation from Him. These are not the only two options; they are the only two options. There is no third road. There is no middle path. There is no neutral ground. Every person who has ever lived is walking on one of these two roads, and the road they are walking determines the destination they will reach.

This is not a new revelation. It is not a hidden mystery. It is not a truth that is reserved for scholars or theologians. It is a truth that God has clearly revealed from the beginning. He set it before Israel through Moses. He set it before the crowds through Jesus. He sets it before you today through His Word. The choice is yours. The road is yours to choose. The destination is yours to determine. But choose wisely, because the choice is final, and the destination is eternal.

Moses stood before the people of Israel on the plains of Moab, just before they entered the Promised Land. He had led them for forty years. He had delivered them from Egypt, given them the Law, and shepherded them through the wilderness. Now, as his time was drawing to a close, he delivered his final sermon. He laid out the stark reality before them: God had set before them two paths. One led to life, blessing, and prosperity. The other led to death, cursing, and destruction. And then he issued the most urgent plea in all of Scripture: "Therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live." The Hebrew word for "choose" is bachar, which means to select, to prefer, or to decide. It is an active decision. It is not passive. God does not make the choice for you. He sets it before you and commands you to choose. The motivation is not just for your own sake but for the sake of your descendants. Your choice affects not only you but your children, your grandchildren, and generations to come.

This teaching is for everyone who is walking a path. It is for the one who is moving in the wrong direction. It is for the one who has been drifting aimlessly. It is for the one who has been following the crowd. It is for the one who needs to understand that there are two roads, and they lead to two destinations. It is time to look straight ahead. It is time to ponder the path of your feet. It is time to choose the narrow gate. It is time to walk in the way that leads to life.

Biblical Truth

Deuteronomy 30:19 and Matthew 7:13–14 together provide a powerful biblical framework for understanding the two roads and the two destinations. They reveal that God has set before us a choice between life and death, blessing and cursing, and that we are to choose the narrow gate that leads to life.

Deuteronomy 30:19 is the climax of Moses' final address to Israel. He is renewing the covenant with the new generation that will enter the Promised Land. He has reviewed the Law, warned them of the consequences of disobedience, and promised the blessings of obedience. Now he makes it personal. He says, "I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you." This is covenant language. Heaven and earth are being summoned as witnesses to the solemn choice that Israel must make. It is a choice with eternal consequences.

The words "life and death, blessing and cursing" are comprehensive. They represent the full spectrum of possible outcomes. Life includes everything that is good—health, prosperity, peace, favor, and eternal relationship with God. Death includes everything that is evil—suffering, destruction, exile, and eternal separation from God. The choice is not complicated; it is stark. There are only two paths. There is no middle ground.

Then comes the command: "Therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live." The word "choose" is bachar, which means to select, to prefer, or to decide. It is an active decision. The phrase "and there are few who find it" is a sobering reality. The Greek word for "few" is oligos, which means few, little, or small. The word for "find" is heuriskō, which means to find, to discover, or to obtain. Jesus is saying that few find the narrow gate. Few find the difficult way. Few find the path that leads to life. Many go through the wide gate. Many walk on the broad way. But few find the narrow gate.

The principle of the two roads is woven throughout Scripture. Psalm 1 contrasts the way of the righteous with the way of the ungodly. The righteous are like a tree planted by rivers of water, bearing fruit in season, whose leaf does not wither. The ungodly are like the chaff which the wind drives away. The righteous will stand in the judgment; the ungodly will perish. Proverbs 14:12 says, "There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death." Jeremiah 21:8 says, "Thus says the Lord: 'Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.'" The pattern is clear: there are two roads, and they lead to two destinations.

The example of Jesus is our ultimate model. Jesus walked the narrow way. He did not take the broad way. He did not choose the easy path. He chose the difficult way. He chose the way of the cross. He said, "Not My will, but Yours, be done" (Luke 22:42). He said, "I have finished the work which You have given Me to do" (John 17:4). He walked the narrow way all the way to the end. And because He did, He secured eternal life for all who believe. He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6). And He calls us to follow Him on the narrow way.

What We Often Get Wrong

The first and most common error is that we believe there are more than two roads. We think that there are many paths to God, many ways to heaven, many roads to life. We think that as long as we are sincere, as long as we are good people, as long as we try our best, we will arrive at the right destination. But Jesus said there are only two roads. There is the narrow gate and the wide gate. There is the difficult way and the broad way. There is the way that leads to life and the way that leads to destruction. There is no third road. There is no middle path. There is no neutral ground.

Second, we choose the wide gate. We choose the path of least resistance. We choose the easy way. We choose the popular way. We choose the crowded way. We choose the broad way. Because it is comfortable. Because it is convenient. Because it is what everyone else is doing. But the wide gate leads to destruction. The broad way leads to ruin. The easy path leads to death. We must not choose the wide gate. We must choose the narrow gate.

Third, we believe that the narrow way is too difficult. We look at the narrow gate. We see how small it is. We see how difficult the path is. We see how few are walking on it. And we are tempted to turn back. We are tempted to take the easier route. We are tempted to abandon the narrow way for the broad way. But Jesus said the narrow way leads to life. The difficult way leads to life. The hard path leads to life. We must not turn back. We must press on. We must continue on the narrow way.

Fourth, we follow the crowd. We see the many people going through the wide gate. We see the crowds on the broad way. And we assume that if everyone is going that way, it must be the right way. But Jesus said that many go through the wide gate. Many walk on the broad way. But it leads to destruction. The crowd is not the standard of truth. The majority is not the measure of righteousness. We must not follow the crowd. We must follow Christ. We must choose the narrow gate.

Fifth, we do not consider the destination. We are so focused on the journey that we forget about the destination. We are so focused on the present that we forget about the future. We are so focused on the temporary that we forget about the eternal. We must consider the destination. We must think about where our path is leading. We must ponder the end of our way. Because the destination is determined by the road we choose.

Sixth, we believe that we can change roads without changing destinations. We think that we can walk on the broad way for a while, and then suddenly switch to the narrow way, and still arrive at the same destination. But this is not true. A person who is walking on the broad way cannot arrive at the destination of the narrow way by simply intending to. They must change roads. They must turn around. They must enter the narrow gate. If you are walking on the wrong road, you must change roads. You must turn around. You must enter the narrow gate. Because the road you choose determines the destination you will reach.

Seventh, we believe that the choice can be delayed. We think that we can put off the decision. We think that we can choose later. We think that we have plenty of time. But today is the day of salvation. Today is the day of decision. Tomorrow is not promised. Delaying is a decision in itself—it is a decision to reject God today. The choice is now. The choice is today. Choose wisely.

God's Perspective

God views the two roads as a matter of life and death. He sets before you life and death, blessing and cursing. He does not hide the consequences. He does not keep you in the dark. He clearly reveals the two paths and the outcomes of each. He pleads with you to choose life. He pleads with you to choose blessing. He pleads with you to choose the narrow gate. He pleads with you to choose the way that leads to life. Because the road you choose determines the destination you will reach.

God's perspective is that He wants you to choose life. He does not want you to perish. He does not want you to be destroyed. He does not want you to spend eternity separated from Him. He says, "As I live, says the Lord God, 'I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked, but that the wicked turn from his way and live. Turn, turn from your evil ways! For why should you die, O house of Israel?'" (Ezekiel 33:11). He says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). He wants you to choose life. He wants you to choose the narrow gate. He wants you to choose the way that leads to life.

God sees your tendency to choose the wide gate as a danger. He knows that the wide gate is popular. He knows that the broad way is easy. He knows that the crowd is going that way. He knows that the broad way is appealing. But He also knows that it leads to destruction. He warns you, "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction" (Matthew 7:13). He wants you to choose the narrow gate. He wants you to choose the difficult way. He wants you to choose the path that leads to life.

God's perspective is that the narrow gate is the right gate. The world tells you that the broad way is the best way. The world tells you that the easy path is the right path. The world tells you that the crowded gate is the preferred gate. But God says the narrow gate is the right gate. It is the gate that leads to life. It is the gate that leads to blessing. It is the gate that leads to eternal joy. It may be difficult. It may be narrow. It may be less traveled. But it is the right gate. Choose it.

God sees your destination as determined by your road. He knows where each road leads. He knows that the wide gate leads to destruction. He knows that the broad way leads to ruin. He knows that the narrow gate leads to life. He knows that the difficult way leads to glory. He sees the end from the beginning. He knows the destination of every road. And He pleads with you to choose the road that leads to life. He pleads with you to choose the narrow gate. He pleads with you to walk in the way that leads to life.

God's perspective is that He will be with you on the narrow way. You do not have to walk alone. You do not have to walk in your own strength. You do not have to walk without help. He will be with you. He will strengthen you. He will guide you. He will protect you. He will provide for you. He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). He will walk with you every step of the way. And He will bring you to the destination He has prepared for you.

Practical Application

Recognize the Two Roads: Acknowledge that there are only two roads. There is the narrow way and the broad way. There is the way that leads to life and the way that leads to destruction. There is no third road. There is no middle path. There is no neutral ground. You are on one of these two roads right now. Which one are you on?

Choose the Narrow Gate: Choose the narrow gate. Do not choose the wide gate. Do not choose the broad way. Do not choose the easy path. Choose the narrow gate. Choose the difficult way. Choose the path that leads to life. It may not be popular. It may not be easy. It may not be crowded. But it leads to life. Choose it.

Enter Through Jesus: The narrow gate is Jesus. He said, "I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved" (John 10:9). He said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). The only way to enter the narrow gate is through Jesus. He is the gate. He is the way. He is the door. Enter through Him.

Walk the Narrow Way: Once you have entered through the narrow gate, walk the narrow way. Stay on the path. Do not turn to the right or to the left. Do not deviate. Do not get distracted. Keep walking. Keep pressing on. Keep moving forward. The narrow way is difficult, but it leads to life. Walk it with endurance. Walk it with faith. Walk it with your eyes on Jesus.

Do Not Follow the Crowd: Do not follow the crowd through the wide gate. Do not follow the majority on the broad way. Do not be swayed by the opinions of others. Do not be pressured by the culture. Do not be conformed to the world. Choose the narrow gate. Choose the difficult way. Choose the path that leads to life. Even if you have to walk alone. Even if you have to stand against the crowd. Choose the narrow gate.

Consider the Destination: Do not just focus on the journey. Consider the destination. Think about where your road is leading. Think about the end of your path. Think about eternity. The wide gate leads to destruction. The narrow gate leads to life. Consider the destination. Let the destination motivate your choice.

Help Others Choose the Narrow Gate: You are not the only one on the journey. There are others who are walking on the broad way. There are others who are heading toward destruction. Help them.
