Not what has your time. Not what has your money. But what has your heart? What has captured your affections? What has seized your devotion? What has taken hold of your inner being?

The principle of the heart is woven throughout Scripture. The heart is the center of your being. It is the control center of your life. It is the seat of your affections, your desires, your motives, and your will. The Bible says, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23). It says, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it?" (Jeremiah 17:9). It says, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10). It says, "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God" (Matthew 5:8). It says, "For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks" (Matthew 12:34). It says, "And you will seek Me and find Me, when you search for Me with all your heart" (Jeremiah 29:13). The heart is central. The heart is crucial. The heart is what God looks at (1 Samuel 16:7).

The example of Jesus is our ultimate model. Jesus guarded His heart with all diligence. He kept His heart fixed on the Father. He said, "I do nothing of Myself; but as My Father taught Me, I speak these things" (John 8:28). He said, "I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me" (John 5:30). He said, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work" (John 4:34). Jesus' heart was captured by the Father. His treasure was in heaven. His affections were set on things above. And because His heart was captured by the right things, His life flowed in the right direction.

What We Often Get Wrong

The first and most common error is that we allow the wrong things to capture our hearts. We allow money, possessions, status, pleasure, and entertainment to capture our hearts. We allow our careers, our hobbies, our relationships, and our dreams to capture our hearts. We allow the things of this world to capture our hearts. And then we wonder why we are not satisfied. We wonder why we are not fulfilled. We wonder why we are not at peace. The problem is not that we have too much of the world; it is that we have too little of God. The problem is not that our hearts are too full; it is that they are full of the wrong things.

Second, we believe that we can treasure both God and the world. We think that we can love God and love money. We think that we can serve God and serve ourselves. We think that we can seek first the Kingdom and also seek first our own comfort. But Jesus is clear: "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon" (Matthew 6:24). You cannot treasure both. You cannot have your heart in two places. You must choose. You must prioritize. You must set your affections on one thing.

Third, we do not guard our hearts. We leave our hearts unguarded. We leave them open to attack. We leave them vulnerable to the enemy. We allow anything and everything to enter in. Fifth, we allow our hearts to become divided. We try to keep one foot in the world and one foot in the Kingdom. We try to love God with part of our heart and love the world with the other part. We try to serve God on Sunday and serve ourselves the rest of the week. But a divided heart is an unstable heart. A divided heart is a double-minded heart. And James says, "A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways" (James 1:8). We must give our whole heart to God. We must love Him with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength (Matthew 22:37).

Sixth, we forget that our hearts follow our treasure. We think that we can invest in the things of this world and still have our hearts in heaven. We think that we can treasure earthly things and still love God. But Jesus says that where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. If you want your heart to be in heaven, you must invest in heaven. If you want your heart to be captured by God, you must treasure God. You must invest in His Kingdom. You must lay up treasures in heaven.

Seventh, we believe that guarding our hearts is a one-time event. We think that if we guard our hearts once, we are done. But guarding your heart is a daily discipline. It is a continuous effort. It is a lifelong commitment. The enemy is always trying to capture your heart. The world is always trying to capture your heart. Your flesh is always trying to capture your heart. You must guard your heart every day. You must guard it moment by moment. You must guard it with all diligence.

God's Perspective

God views your heart as the most important part of who you are. He does not look at the outward appearance; He looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). He does not care about your external behavior as much as He cares about your internal condition. He does not want your religious rituals if your heart is far from Him. He wants your heart. He wants your love. He wants your devotion. He wants your affections. He wants to be the treasure of your heart.

God's perspective is that He is the only treasure worth pursuing. Everything else in this world will pass away. Money will be spent. Possessions will decay. Status will fade. Pleasure will end. Relationships will change. Only God is eternal. Only God is unchanging. Only God is worthy of your ultimate devotion. He is the pearl of great price. He is the treasure hidden in the field. He is the one worth selling everything for (Matthew 13:44-46).

God sees your heart as a garden that must be cultivated. Your heart is the soil in which the seeds of God's Word are planted. It is the place where the fruit of the Spirit grows. God's perspective is that He can renew your heart. Even if your heart has been captured by the wrong things, God can renew it. He can cleanse it. He can restore it. He can give you a new heart. He says, "I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh" (Ezekiel 36:26). He can change your affections. He can reorder your loves. He can capture your heart with Himself.

Practical Application

Examine Your Heart: Take time to honestly examine your heart. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal what has captured your heart. Ask Him, "Lord, what is the treasure of my heart? What do I love most? What do I value most? What do I pursue most? What do I think about most? What do I spend my time on? What do I spend my money on?" Be honest with yourself. Be honest with God. And then deal with what He reveals.

Set Your Affections on Things Above: Paul wrote, "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2). Set your affections on things above. Fix your eyes on Jesus. Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. Make God your treasure. Make His Kingdom your priority. Make His glory your goal. Invest in what is eternal. Lay up treasures in heaven.

Guard Your Heart with All Diligence: Be vigilant. Be alert. Be intentional. Guard your heart. Be careful what you watch. Be careful what you listen to. Be careful what you read. Be careful who you spend time with. Be careful what you allow into your heart. Filter everything through the Word of God. Test everything against the truth. Protect your heart from the enemy's attacks.

Cultivate Your Heart with the Word: Your heart is a garden. The Word of God is the seed. Plant it. Water it. Cultivate it. Let the Word dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16). Meditate on it day and night (Psalm 1:2). Let it take root in your heart. Let it grow. Let it produce fruit. The more you fill your heart with the Word, the less room there is for the world.

Pray for a Pure Heart: David prayed, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10). Pray for a pure heart. Pray for an undivided heart. Pray for a heart that is fully devoted to God. Ask Him to remove any idols. Ask Him to cleanse any impurity. Ask Him to capture your heart with Himself.

Surround Yourself with People Who Love God: The people you surround yourself with will influence what captures your heart. Make God Your Treasure: The key to a pure heart is making God your treasure. When God is your treasure, your heart will be in heaven. When God is your treasure, your affections will be set on things above. When God is your treasure, your life will be devoted to Him. Make God your treasure. Pursue Him. Love Him. Worship Him. Delight in Him. And your heart will be captured by Him.
