CHRIST IN THE PSALMS (6)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Both the Jewish and Christian faiths have long believed that many psalms referred as much to the promised Messiah as they did to events at the time. Because the Messiah was to be a descendant of David, it was expected that many of the royal psalms would apply to him. Christians noted how many of the passages seemed to describe in detail events from Christ's life and death. Jesus himself frequently quoted from Psalms. Almost everything that happened at the crucifixion and most of Jesus' words during his final hours are prophesied in Psalms.
b) Here are the main references in Psalms pertaining to Christ.
1. Reference in Psalms 110:1
@1. The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool.” (Psalms 110:1 NKJV)
a) Reference to Christ
@1. He is David's son and David's Lord.
b) Fulfillment in the New Testament
@1. 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”’? (Matthew 22:44 NKJV)
2. Reference in Psalms 110:4
@1. 4 The Lord has sworn And will not relent, “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalms 110:4 NKJV)
a) Reference to Christ
@1. He is the eternal priest-king.
b) Fulfillment in the New Testament
@1. 20 where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek. (Hebrews 6:20 NKJV)
3. Reference in Psalms 118:22
@1. 22 The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone. (Psalms 118:22 NKJV)
a) Reference to Christ
@1. He is rejected by many but accepted by God.
b) Fulfillment in the New Testament
@1. Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, “The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone,” 8 and “A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense.” They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. (1 Peter 2:7-8 NKJV)
