RELIGIOUS & POLITICAL GROUPS: THE HERODIANS

0. Introduction

a) People are asking about the religious and political parties that existed in Israel during the days of Jesus' ministry, about 2000 years ago. To help you understand what these parties stood for, and how they affected Christ and Israel, a short description on each of the major parties is given below.

1. The Herodians

a) Text reference: Matthew 22:16; Mark 3:6, 12:13

i) 16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, “Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the person of men. (Matthew 22:16 NKJV)

ii) 6 Then the Pharisees went out and immediately plotted with the Herodians against Him, how they might destroy Him. (Mark 3:16 NKJV)

iii) 13 Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, to catch Him in His words. (Mark 12:13 NKJV)

b) Description

i) A Jewish political party of King Herod's supporters.

c) Agreement with Jesus

i) Unknown.

ii) In the Gospels they tried to trap Jesus with questions and plotted to kill him.

d) Disagreement with Jesus

i) Afraid Jesus causing political instability.

ii) They saw Jesus as a threat to their political future at a time when they were trying to regain from Rome some of their lost political power.
