CRITICIZING GOD'S LEADERS - BAR-JESUS, A SORCERER

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) It is dangerous to criticize God's leaders. Consider the consequences for men and women who do such a thing in the Bible.

b) Here is one of them.

1. Person

a) Bar-Jesus, a sorcerer.

2. Situation

a) Lied about Paul in an attempt to turn the proconsul against him.

3. Result

a) Striken with blindess.

4. Reference text: Acts 13:6-12

i) 6 Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, 7 who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. 8 But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. 9 Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him 10 and said, “O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? 11 And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time.” And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. 12 Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord. (Acts 13:6-12 NKJV)

5. What is the text all about?

a) A proconsul was a high Roman official. Here he functioned as the governor of the island. Such leaders often kept private sorcerers. Bar-Jesus realized that if Sergius Paulus believed in Jesus, he would soon be out of a job.

b) The Holy Spirit led Paul to confront Bar-Jesus with his sin. There is a time to be nice and a time to confront. Ask God to show you the difference and to give you the courage to do what is right.
