JESUS & THE FATHER ONE GOD? (2)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) How exactly are Jesus and the Father ONE? Was Jesus CREATED or has he eternally existed with the Father? Is our Savior the GOD of the Old Testament who created man and dealt with Noah, Abraham, Moses, the nation of Israel and all the prophets? How is the Father GREATER than our Lord?
1. John's gospel
a) In order to combat the Gnostics and their false doctrines that Christ only appeared to be made of flesh when he came to die for man's sin, but really was not (2John 7; 1John 4:2-3), John emphasizes his humanity but affirms his ultimate Deity.
i) "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and not even one thing that was created came into being without Him . . . And the Word became flesh, and tabernacle among us" (John 1:1-3, 14)
b) Jesus is, without a doubt, 'the Word.' Another key section showing the true identity of Jesus is in John 5.
i) "But Jesus answered them, 'My Father is working until now, and I work.' So then, on account of this saying, the Jews sought all the more to kill Him, not only because He had loosed the Sabbath, but also because He had called God His own Father, making Himself equal with God." (John 5:17-18)
c) Unlike the Jews of his day, Jesus referred to God the Father in a way they believed was blasphemous. Jesus also said in John something the Jews wanted him dead for proclaiming.
ii) "(Jesus said) 'I and the Father are one.' Then the Jews again picked up stones so that they might stone Him. Jesus answered them, 'Many good works I have showed you from My Father. For which of them are you about to stone Me?' The Jews answered Him, saying, 'We will not stone You for a good work, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a man, are making Yourself God.'" (John 10:30-33)
d) Jesus side-stepped the accusations thrown at him by quoting Psalms 82:6 to affirm he was God's son.
The End ...
