MOTHERS OF KINGS: ZERUAH
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Mothers of Kings
a) Mothers of kings in 1 & 2 Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles are often mentioned for their deeds. These mothers certainly had some influence in the young lives of their sons and in who they eventually turned out to be. There are many children with godly mothers who grow up and choose to do evil. And there are just as many children with bad mothers who grow up and choose to do good. But for the most part, the faith and the future of all children is shaped to some extent by the behavior, words and actions of their parents.
b) A child is a reflection of the woman who bore him or her – not only in appearance, but also in word, action, attitude and character. Mothers should never underestimate the influence that they and their faith have in their children’s lives. Mothers have the power to change the world by raising sons and daughters who will be bearers of light, proclaimers of truth, defenders of justice and forces of good.
c) Here we have one of the many records of mothers influencing their sons for good or evil.
2. Zeruah
i) Zeruah (1 Kings 11:26) was the mother of Jeroboam, the first king of the divided Kingdom of Israel. He reigned for twenty-two years. The Bible shows how he started off well as a skilled worker for King Solomon, but he later turned evil.
1 Kings 11:26 New King James Version (NKJV)
