MOTHERS OF KINGS: ZIBIAH
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Mothers of Kings
a) Mothers of kings in 1 & 2 Kings and 1 & 2 Chronicles are often mentioned for their deeds. These mothers certainly had some influence in the young lives of their sons and in who they eventually turned out to be. There are many children with godly mothers who grow up and choose to do evil. And there are just as many children with bad mothers who grow up and choose to do good. But for the most part, the faith and the future of all children is shaped to some extent by the behavior, words and actions of their parents.
b) A child is a reflection of the woman who bore him or her – not only in appearance, but also in word, action, attitude and character. Mothers should never underestimate the influence that they and their faith have in their children’s lives. Mothers have the power to change the world by raising sons and daughters who will be bearers of light, proclaimers of truth, defenders of justice and forces of good.
c) Here we have one of the many records of mothers influencing their sons for good or evil.
2. Zibiah
i) Zibiah (2 Kings 12:1-2; 2 Chronicles 24:1) was the mother of Joash, a king of Judah. He was crowned at six years of age and reigned for forty years. The Bible says he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord all the years Jehoiada the priest instructed him. But after Jehoiada the priest died, Joash forgot God.
2 Kings 12:1-2 New King James Version (NKJV)
12 In the seventh year of Jehu, Jehoash became king, and he reigned forty years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zibiah of Beersheba. 2 Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord all the days in which Jehoiada the priest instructed him.
2 Chronicles 24:1 New King James Version (NKJV)
