SEVEN SIGNS (2-5): THE SPLENDID WOMAN'S ESCAPE (REVELATION 12:13-17)

1. Revelation
a) John wrote Revelation while a prisoner on the Island of Patmos, approximately 85-95 A.D. Its purpose is to give encouragement and hope for all Christians to continue watching for the return and triumph of the Lord Jesus Christ. It also is to warn of the Final Judgment that nonbelievers will endure on that Last Day.
b) John wrote that Revelation is special because,“Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3).
c) A brief view of the Book of Revelation. It gives you some basic understanding of the book of Revelation.
2. The Escape
Revelation 12:13-17
13 And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. 14 But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. 17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
3. The Splendid Woman's Escape
Revelation 12:13-17
a) The dragon turns to persecuting the splendid woman who had given birth to the man child. She was given two wings of a great eagle and flew to refuge in the wilderness. The dragon tried to flush her out by spewing a flood of water from his mouth, but the ground soaked it up. So having thrice failed, the dragon turned upon the woman's offspring, those who keep God's commandments and have the gospel (Revelation 12:13-17).
b) The splendid woman represents the grace of God. It was by grace that Christ was born, and by grace that he died and rose again to become our Savior. Even now by grace we endure tribulation and have the victory over Satan who is furiously attacking us. Tribulation is to be expected in this world and "through much tribulation we must enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:22).
