SEVEN SIGNS (3-1): THE BEAST APPEARS FROM THE SEA (REVELATION 13:1-2)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Revelation

a) John wrote Revelation while a prisoner on the Island of Patmos, approximately 85-95 A.D. Its purpose is to give encouragement and hope for all Christians to continue watching for the return and triumph of the Lord Jesus Christ. It also is to warn of the Final Judgment that nonbelievers will endure on that Last Day.

b) John wrote that Revelation is special because,“Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy, and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near” (Revelation 1:3).

c) A brief view of the Book of Revelation. It gives you some basic understanding of the book of Revelation.

2. The Beast Appears From The Sea

Revelation 13:1-2
13 And the dragon stood on the sand of the [a]seashore.

Then I saw a beast coming up out of the sea, having ten horns and seven heads, and on his horns were ten diadems, and on his heads were blasphemous names. 2 And the beast which I saw was like a leopard, and his feet were like those of a bear, and his mouth like the mouth of a lion. And the dragon gave him his power and his throne and great authority.

3. The Nature Of The Beast

Revelation 13:1-2

a) From the sea

i) An angel had announced, "Woe to the inhabitants of earth and sea, for the Devil has come down to you..." (Revelation 12:12). So now, in this vision, a beast arises from the sea. This will be followed by another vision in which a beast arises from the earth.

b) Heads, horns, crowns

i) The Beast has heads, horns, and crowns just like the Dragon because the Dragon’s authority is given to, and exercised through, the Beast and his image (Revelation 12:3, Revelation 13:1-8). These heads, horns, and crowns are signs of political authority, military might, and financial dominion —the trappings of a world superpower.

c) Leopard, bear, lion

i) The form of the beast resembles a mixture of leopard, bear, and lion. These are creatures swift, strong, and feared. They represent "power, throne, and authority" (Revelation 13:2). The vision is portraying a powerful kingdom encompassing several nations. In John’s time this was the Roman Empire, but it was not the first such empire and it certainly was not the last. The beast still lives.
