DIVINE REST (2)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

1. Fasting

a) Fasting is actually giving rest for our digestive organs and other related functions. It is the practice of abstaining from food completely or partially for a specified period. It is a very normal practice in biblical teachings.

b) Jesus taught his disciples how they should fast.

i) 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. (Matthew 6:17-18 NIV)

c) Fasting is to be done unto the Lord.

i)2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” (Acts 13:2 NIV)

d) Through fasting we humble our souls and receive more of God's grace.

i) 10 When I weep and fast, I must endure scorn." (Psalms 69:10 NIV)

e) Fasting also break the power of fleshly bondage.

i) 6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke?" (Isaiah 58:6 NIV)

f) Fasting even break the power of gluttony and grant us further authority in spiritual battles.

i) 29 He replied, “This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting." (Mark 9:29 NIV)

g) There are different types of fasts:

i) Normal fasts; abstaining from all food, solid or liquid, but not from water.

@1. "2Where for forty days he was tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry." (Luke 4:2 NIV)

ii) Total fasts; abstaining from all food; solid or liquid.

@1. 16 “Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16 NIV)

iii) Partial fasts; includes omitting one meal a day omitting certain foods for a specific period.

h) Fasting benefits us physically, mentally and spiritually and it is highly recommended that every Christian should learn this discipline.

@1. 6 “Is not this the kind of fasting I have chosen: to loose the chains of injustice and untie the cords of the yoke, to set the oppressed free and break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your food with the hungry and to provide the poor wanderer with shelter - when you see the naked, to clothe them, and not to turn away from your own flesh and blood? 8 Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard. 9 Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and he will say: Here am I. “If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, 10 and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday. 1 The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. 12 Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings." (Isaiah 58:6-12 NIV)

The End ...
