WHY SICKNESS? (3)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Sickness caused by demonic activities
a) Demons, Satan's fallen angels bring diseases and pain. Just as Jesus said, "10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10 NIV). In numerous occasions, when Jesus cast out the evil spirit, there was immediate healing.
i) 14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed. (Luke 11:14 NIV)
ii) 26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” "Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.
34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. (Luke 8:26-39 NIV)
b) When god created the heavens and the earth, he had placed different laws that governed the universe e.g. laws of gravity, laws of sowing and reaping, law of cause and effect etc. Whosoever break any of his natural law will suffer the consequences unless the Lord supernaturally intervenes. Anyone jumping off a tall building; irrespective of whether he is a spiritual Christian or an unspiritual worldly pre-believer, will both suffer the same consequence. In the same way, God has got some natural health laws, when Christian breaks these health laws they fall sick. While there are pre-believers who follow these natural laws e.g. the Hunza people, they lived long and healthy life (the average lifespan of the Hunza were around 120 - 145 years).
c) For optimal health and long life, God has granted us the following health rules:
i) Pure air.
@1. 7 So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so. (Genesis 1:7 NIV)
ii) Clean water.
@1. 6 I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb. Strike the rock, and water will come out of it for the people to drink.” So Moses did this in the sight of the elders of Israel. (Exodus 17:6 NIV)
iii) Nutritious natural God given food.
@1. 29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food." (Genesis 1:29 NIV)
iv) Exercise and sunshine.
@1. 19 By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.” (Genesis 3:19 NIV)
v) Clean hygiene.
@1. 18 When a man has sexual relations with a woman and there is an emission of semen, both of them must bathe with water, and they will be unclean till evening. (Leviticus 15:18 NIV)
vi) Sabbath rest.
@1. 8 “Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant, nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. (Exodus 20:8-11 NIV)
vii) Faith in God.
@1. 9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame." (Romans 10:9-11 NIV)
2. Prayer focus
a) Pray that we when we fall sick, we will ask Jesus to heal our body, soul and spirit.
b) Pray that we will observe the health and spiritual laws given by God himself.
