CHRIST IN THE PSALMS (1)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Both the Jewish and Christian faiths have long believed that many psalms referred as much to the promised Messiah as they did to events at the time. Because the Messiah was to be a descendant of David, it was expected that many of the royal psalms would apply to him. Christians noted how many of the passages seemed to describe in detail events from Christ's life and death. Jesus himself frequently quoted from Psalms. Almost everything that happened at the crucifixion and most of Jesus' words during his final hours are prophesied in Psalms.
b) Here are the main references in Psalms pertaining to Christ.
1. Reference in Psalms 2:7
@1. 7 “I will declare the decree: The Lord has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. (Psalms 2:7 NKJV)
a) Reference to Christ
@1. The Messiah will be God's Son.
b) Fulfillment in the New Testament
@1. 5 For to which of the angels did He ever say: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You”? And again: “I will be to Him a Father, And He shall be to Me a Son”? 6 But when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says: “Let all the angels of God worship Him." (Hebrews 1:5-6 NKJV)
2. Reference in Psalms 16:8-10
@1. 8 I have set the Lord always before me; Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. 9 Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoices; My flesh also will rest in hope. 10 For You will not leave my soul in Sheol. (Psalms 16:8-10 NKJV)
a) Reference to Christ
@1. He will rise from the dead.
b) Fulfillment in the New Testament
@1. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’” (Luke 24:5-7 NKJV)
3. Reference in Psalms 22:18
@1. 18 They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots. (Psalms 22:18 NKJV)
a) Reference to Christ
@1. Evil men cast lots for his clothing.
b) Fulfillment in the New Testament
@1. 35 Then they crucified Him, and divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” (Matthew 27:35 NKJV)
@2. 23 Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece. 24 They said therefore among themselves, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be,” that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Therefore the soldiers did these things. (John 19:23-24 NKJV)
