HOW JESUS' TRIAL WAS ILLEGAL (1)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) The religious leaders were not interested in giving Jesus a fair trail. Jesus had to die. This blind obsession led them to pervert the justice they were appointed to protect.

b) Here are many examples of the actions taken by the religious leaders that were illegal according to their own laws.

1. Before the trial began, it had been determined that Jesus must die (see John 11:50; Mark 14:1). There was no "innocent until proven guilty" approach.

i) 50 nor do you consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation should perish. (John 11:50 NKJV)

ii) After two days it was the Passover and the Feast of Unleavened Bread. And the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death. (Mark 14:1 NKJV)

2. False witnesses were sought to testify against Jesus (see Matthew 26:59). Usually the religious leaders went through an elaborate system of screening witnesses to ensure justice.

i) 59 Now the chief priests, the elders, and all the council sought false testimony against Jesus to put Him to death. (Matthew 26:59 NKJV)

3. No defense for Jesus was sought or allowed (see Luke 22:67-71)

i) 67 “If You are the Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will by no means believe. 68 And if I also ask you, you will by no means answer Me or let Me go. 69 Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.” 70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?” So He said to them, “You rightly say that I am.” 71 And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.” (Luke 22:67-71 NKJV)
