TRUE OR FALSE GOSPEL

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Let's look at the marks of the true gospel and of false gospels.

1. Marks of a false gospel

a) Treats Christ's death as meaningless (Galatians 2:21).

i) 21 I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain. (Galatians 2:21 NKJV)

b) Says people must obey the law in order to be saved (Galatians 3:12).

i) 12 Yet the law is not of faith, but “the man who does them shall live by them. (Galatians 3:12 NKJV)

c) Tries to find favor with God by observing certain rituals (Galatians 4:10).

i) 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years. (Galatians 4:10 NKJV)

d) Counts on keeping laws to erase sin (Galatians 5:4).

i) 4 You have become estranged from Christ, you who attempt to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace. (Galatians 5:4 NKJV)

2. Marks of the true gospel

a) Teaches that the source of the gospel is God (Galatians 1:11-12).

i) 11 But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. (Galatians 1:11-12 NKJV)

b) Knows that life is obtained through death; we trust in the God who loved us and died for us so that we might die to sin and live for him (Galatians 2:20).

i) 20 I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20 NKJV)

c) Explains that all believers have the Holy Spirit through faith (Galatians 3:14).

i)   14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. (Galatians 3:14 NKJV)

d) Declares that we cannot saved by keeping laws; the only way of salvation is through faith in Christ, which is available to all (Galatians 3:21-22).

i) 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? Certainly not! For if there had been a law given which could have given life, truly righteousness would have been by the law. 22 But the Scripture has confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe. (Galatians 3:21-22 NKJV)

e) Says that all believers are one in Christ, so there is no basis for discrimination of any kind (Galatians 3:26-28).

i) 26 For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. 27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. (Galatians 3:26-28 NKJV)

f) Proclaims that we are free from the grip of sin and that the Holy Spirit's power fills and guides us (Galatians 5:24-25).

i) 24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. (Galatians 5:24-25 NKJV)
