CRUCIAL CONCEPTS IN ROMANS

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Here are some crucial concepts found in Romans.

1. Election

a) God's choice of an individual or group for a specific purpose or destiny.

b) Text reference: Romans 9:10-13

i) 10 And not only this, but when Rebecca also had conceived by one man, even by our father Isaac 11 (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), 12 it was said to her, “The older shall serve the younger.”  13 As it is written, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated.” (Romans 9:10-13 NKJV)

2. Justification

a) God's act of declaring us "not guilty" for our sins.

b) Text reference: Romans 4:25; 5:18

i) 25 who was delivered up because of our offenses, and was raised because of our justification. (Romans 4:25 NKJV)

ii) 18 Therefore, as through one man’s offense judgment came to all men, resulting in condemnation, even so through one Man’s righteous act the free gift came to all men, resulting in justification of life. (Romans 5:18 NKJV)

3. Propitiation

a) The removal of God's punishment for sin through the perfect sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

b) Text reference: Romans 3:25

i) 25 whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed. (Romans 3:25 NKJV)

4. Redemption

a) Jesus Christ has paid the price so we can go free. The price of sin is death; Jesus paid the price.

b) Text reference: Romans 3:24; 8:23

i) 24 being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. (Romans 3:24 NKJV)

ii) 23 Not only that, but we also who have the first-fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. (Romans 8:23 NKJV)

5. Sanctification

a) Becoming more and more like Jesus Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit.

b) Text reference: Romans 5:2; 15:16

i) 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:2 NKJV)

ii) 16 that I might be a minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering of the Gentiles might be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. (Romans 15:16 NKJV)

6. Glorification

a) The ultimate state of the believer after death when he or she becomes like Christ (see 1 John 3:2).

i) 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. (1 John 3:2 NKJV)

b) Text reference: Romans 8:18-19, 30

i) 18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19 For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. (Romans 8:18-19 NKJV)

ii) 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified. (Romans 8:30 NKJV)
