THE FOUR TONGUES (1)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) What we say probably affects more people than any other action we take. It is not surprising, then, to find that Proverbs gives special attention to words and how they are used. Four common speech patterns are described in Proverbs. The first two should be copied, while the last two should be avoided.
1. The Controlled Tongue
a) Those with this speech pattern think before speaking, know when silence is best, and give wise advice.
b) Text references: Proverbs 10:19; 11:12-13; 12:16; 13:3; 15:1; 15:4; 15:28; 16:23;17:4; 17:27-28; 21:23; 24:26
@1. 19 In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, But he who restrains his lips is wise. (Proverbs 10:19)
@2. 12 He who is devoid of wisdom despises his neighbor, But a man of understanding holds his peace. 13 A talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is of a faithful spirit conceals a matter. (Proverbs 11:12-13 NKJV)
@3. 16 A fool’s wrath is known at once, But a prudent man covers shame. (Proverbs 12:16 NKJV)
@4. 3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction. (Proverbs 13:3 NKJV)
@5. A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger. (Proverbs 15:1 NKJV)
@6. 4 A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4 NKJV)
@7. 28 The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil. (Proverbs 15:28 NKJV)
