REBELS - SHALLUM KING OF ISRAEL

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) The Bible records many rebellions. Many were against God's chosen leaders. They were doomed for failure. Others were begun by wicked men against wicked men. While these were sometimes successful, the rebel's life usually came to a violent end. Still other rebellions were made by good people against the wicked or unjust actions of others. This kind of rebellion is sometimes good in freeing the common people from oppression and giving them the freedom to turn back to God.

1. Who rebelled?

a) Shallum king of Israel.

2. Who they rebelled against?

a) Zechariah king of Israel.

3. What happened

a) Overthrew the throne, but then was assassinated.

4. Text Reference: 2 Kings 15:8-15

i) 8 In the thirty-eighth year of Azariah king of Judah, Zechariah the son of Jeroboam reigned over Israel in Samaria six months. 9 And he did evil in the sight of the Lord, as his fathers had done; he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who had made Israel sin. 10 Then Shallum the son of Jabesh conspired against him, and struck and killed him in front of the people; and he reigned in his place. 11 Now the rest of the acts of Zechariah, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. 12 This was the word of the Lord which He spoke to Jehu, saying, “Your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.” And so it was. 13 Shallum the son of Jabesh became king in the thirty-ninth year of Uzziah king of Judah; and he reigned a full month in Samaria. 14 For Menahem the son of Gadi went up from Tirzah, came to Samaria, and struck Shallum the son of Jabesh in Samaria and killed him; and he reigned in his place.

15 Now the rest of the acts of Shallum, and the conspiracy which he led, indeed they are written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel. (2 Kings 15:8-15 NKJV)

5. What is the text all about?

a) Zechariah was an evil king because he encouraged Israel to sin by worshiping idols. Sin in our lives is serious. But it is even more serious to encourage others to disobey God. We are responsible for the way we influence others. Beware of double sins; ones that not only hurt us, but also hurt others by encouraging them to sin.

b) Zechariah was warned by the prophet Amos of his impending death and the subsequent end of Jeroboam's dynasty (see Amos 7:9).

@1. 9 The high places of Isaac shall be desolate, And the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste. I will rise with the sword against the house of Jeroboam. (Amos 7:9 NKJV)

c) Ancient historical documents say that Menahem was the commander-in-chief of Jeroboam's army. After Jeroboam's son was assassinated, Menahem probably saw himself, and not Shallum, as the rightful successor to Israel's throne.

The End ...
