Hymn writer (lyrics): Knowles Shaw (1834 - 1878) Music composer: George A. Minor (1845 - 1904) Notes  Born in the southwestern part of the state of Ohio, Shaw was a member of the Disciples of Christ. He died tragically in a Texas train wreck at the age of 43. During his short ministry it is believed Shaw baptized roughly 20,000 people. George Minor served in the American Civil War  (which ran from 1861 - 1865) as Chief of Ordnance for the Confederacy.
