HYMN: I LOVE TO TELL THE STORY

(Message by Tanny Keng)

I Love to Tell the Story

Hymn writer (lyrics): Katherine Hankey, Refrain by William Fischer

Music composer: William Fischer

Notes

The verses for both the above hymn and another one were taken from
a 100-verse poem written by Katherine in 1866. Mr. Fischer worked as a college
professor in music for ten years, after which he started a successful piano store.

Music in the Bible

a) The Bible credits Jubal, a descendant of Cain, as the first inventor of musical instruments. According to Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible, Jubal was the 'father' of those who played the harp and organ - those who made music with stringed instruments and others who utilized wind instruments (Genesis 4:21).

b) God created angels with the ability to sing. When Lucifer, who later rebelled and turned into Satan the Devil, was created he was given special musical talents (Job 38:1-4, 6-7, Ezekiel 28:12-13). The New Testament encourages believers to not only use songs to worship God but also to use them to encourage each other. The apostle Paul, in the book of Ephesians, tells the church at Ephesus not to get drunk but rather to speak and sing to each other with hymns, psalms and sacred songs to the Lord (Ephesians 5:18-19, see also Acts 16:25).

The End ...
