7TH BROKEN COMMANDMENT

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) The 10 Commandments were God's standard for right living. To obey them was to obey God. Yet throughout the Old Testament, we can see how each commandment was broken.

b) As you read the stories, notice the tragic consequences that occurred as a result of violating God's law.

1. 7th Commandment

a) The 10 Commandments said ...

i) 14 “You shall not commit adultery." (Exodus 20:14 NKJV)

b) Notable Violations

i) David
(Text: 2 Samuel 11:2-5)

@1. 2 Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold. 3 So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said, “Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?” 4 Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house. 5 And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said, “I am with child.” (2 Samuel 11:2-5 NKJV)

2. What is the text all about?

a) As David looked from the roof of the palace, he saw a beautiful woman bathing, and he was filled with lust. David should have left the roof and fled the temptation. Instead, he entertained the temptation by inquiring about Bathsheba. The results were devastating.

b) To flee temptation:

@1. ask God in earnest prayer to help you stay away from people, places, and situations that may tempt you,

@2. Memorize and meditate on portions of Scripture that combat your specific weaknesses. At the root of most temptation is a real need or desire that God can fill, but we must trust in his timing.

@3. Find another believer with whom you can openly share your struggles, and call this person for help when temptation strikes.

c) The phrase "she was cleansed from her impurity" means that Bathsheba had just completed the purification rites following menstruation. Thus she could not have already been pregnant by her own husband when David slept with her.

The End ...
