MUSIC IN BIBLE TIMES (5)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Paul clearly puts forth the Christian's view that things are not good or bad in and of themselves (see 1 Corinthians 14:7-8, 26).
@1. 7 Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? 8 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? (1 Corinthians 14:7-8 NKJV)
@2. 26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. (1 Corinthians 14:26 NKJV)
b) The point should always be to worship the Lord or help others by means of the things of this world, including music. Music was created by God and can be returned to him in praise.
c) Does the music you play or listen to have a negative or positive impact upon your relationship with God?
d) In the New Testament, worship continued in the synagogues until the Christians became unwelcome there, so there was a rich musical heritage already established. The fact that music is mentioned less often in the New Testament does not mean it was less important.
1. What are the highlights of musical use in Scripture?
a) Jesus and his disciples sang a hymn.
#i) Scripture text: Matthew 26:30
@1. 30 And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives. (Matthew 26:30 NKJV)
b) Paul and Silas sang in jail.
#i) Scripture text: Acts 16:25
@1. 25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. (Acts 16:25 NKJV)
c) We are to sing to the Lord as a response to what he has done in our lives.
#i) Scripture text: Ephesians 5:19-20; Colossians 3:16; James 5:13
@1. 19 speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, 20 giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Ephesians 5:19-20 NKJV)
@2. 16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. (Colossians 3:16 NKJV)
@3. 13 Is anyone among you suffering? Let him pray. Is anyone cheerful? Let him sing psalms. (James 5:13 NKJV)
The End ...
