THE TEMPTATIONS

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) As if going through a final test  of preparation, Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Three specific parts of the temptation are listed by Matthew. They are familiar because we face the same kinds of temptations.

b) We can see from below that temptation is often the combination of a real need and a possible doubt that create an inappropriate desire. Jesus demonstrates both the importance and the effectiveness of knowing and applying Scripture to combat temptation.

1. Temptation

a) Make bread

b) Dare God to resure you (based on misapplied Scripture, Psalms 91:11-12). Worshiop me! (Satan).

i) 11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. 12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone. (Psalms 91:11-12 NKJV)

2. Real needs used as a basis for temptation

a) Physical need: "Hunger."

b) Emotional need: "Security."

c) Psychological need: "Significance, power, achievement."

3. Potential weaknesses Satan sought to exploit

a) Hunger, impatience, need to "prove" his Sonship.

b) Pride, insecurity, need to test God.

c) Desire for quick power, easy solutions, need to prove equality with God.

4. Jesus' answer

a) Deuteronomy 8:3

i) "Depend on God."

ii) Focus: God's purpose.

b) Deuteronomy 6:16

i) "Don't test God."

ii) Focus: God's plan.

c) Deuteronomy 6:13

i) "No compromise with evil."

ii) Focus: God's person.
