HOW TO SUCCEED IN GOD'S EYES (2)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Proverbs notes two significant by-products of wise living: success and good reputation. Several verses also point out what causes failure and poor reputation.

1. Qualities that prevent success and cause a bad reputation

a) Wickedness (Proverbs 10:7; 12:3; 28:12)

i) 7 The memory of the righteous is blessed, But the name of the wicked will rot. (Proverbs 10:7 NKJV)

ii) 3 A man is not established by wickedness, But the root of the righteous cannot be moved. (Proverbs 12:3 NKJV)

iii) 12 When the righteous rejoice, there is great glory; But when the wicked arise, men hide themselves. (Proverbs 28:12 NKJV)

b) Seeking honor (Proverbs 25:27)

i) 27 It is not good to eat much honey; So to seek one’s own glory is not glory. (Proverbs 25:27 NKJV)

c) Hatred (Proverbs 26:24-26)

i) 24 He who hates, disguises it with his lips, And lays up deceit within himself; 25 When he speaks kindly, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart; 26 Though his hatred is covered by deceit, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly. (Proverbs 26:24-26 NKJV)

d) Praising oneself (Proverbs 27:2)

i) 2 Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; A stranger, and not your own lips. (Proverbs 27:2 NKJV)

e) Concealing sin (Proverbs 28:13)

i) 13 He who covers his sins will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them will have mercy. (Proverbs 28;13 NKJV)

3. Other verses dealing with one's reputation (Proverbs 11:10, 16; 14:3; 19:10; 22:1; 23:17-18)

i) 10 When it goes well with the righteous, the city rejoices; And when the wicked perish, there is jubilation. (Proverbs 11:10 NKJV)

ii) 16 A gracious woman retains honor, But ruthless men retain riches. (Proverbs 11:16 NKJV)

iii) 3 In the mouth of a fool is a rod of pride, But the lips of the wise will preserve them. (Proverbs 14:3 NKJV)

iv) 10 Luxury is not fitting for a fool, Much less for a servant to rule over princes. (Proverbs 19:10 NKJV)

v) A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, Loving favor rather than silver and gold. (Proverbs 22:1 NKJV)

vi) 17 Do not let your heart envy sinners, But be zealous for the fear of the Lord all the day; 18 For surely there is a hereafter, And your hope will not be cut off. (Proverbs 23:17-18 NKJV)
