FIVE NAMES OF MESSIAH

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Isaiah uses 5 names to describe the Messiah (see Isaiah 9:6). These names have special meaning to us.

i) 6 For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. (Isaiah 9:6 NKJV)

b) Who is the Messiah?

i) The special servant of God, the name that God chose for Jesus Christ. It means the person whom God sent to save people from God's anger against their sin and to be their king; the only one who can put people right with God; God promised the Jews that the Messiah would save them and be their king; they did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah when he came; Jews are still waiting for a Messiah; the one who will come again to rule over God's kingdom for ever; God's anointed one; Christ is the Greek word for Messiah.

c) In time of great darkness, God promised to send a light who would shine on everyone living in the shadow of death. He is both "Counselor" and "Mighty God." This message of hope was fulfilled in the birth of Christ and the establishment of his eternal kingdom. He came to deliver all people from their slavery to sin.

1. Wonderful

a) He is exceptional, distinguished, and without peer.

2. Counselor

3. Mighty God

a) He is God himself.

4. Everlasting Father
