HOSEA THE PROPHET TO ISRAEL
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Hosea served as a prophet to Israel (the northern kingdom) from 753-715 B.C.
1. Climate of the times
a) Israel's last six kings were especially wicked; they promoted heavy taxes, oppression of the poor, idol worhsip, and total disregard for God.
b) Israel was subjected to Assyria and was forced to pay tribute, which depleted its few remaining resources.
2. Main message
a) The people of Israel has sinned against God, as an adulterous woman sins against her husband.
b) Judgment was sure to come for living in total disregard for God and fellow humans.
c) Israel fell to Assyria in 722 B.C.
3. Importance of message
a) When we sin, we sever our relationship with God, breaking our commitment to him. While all must answer to God for their sins, those who seek God's forgiveness are spared eternal judgment.
