Battle of the Republic

Hymn writer (lyrics): Julia Ward Howe Notes  Julia was the fourth child of financially well-off banker Samuel Ward. She was inspired to write the Battle Hymn song after visiting America president Abraham Lincoln in 1861. The story of her life won the 1917 Pulitzer Prize for a biography. It was the first time the award was offered.

Major U.S. Wars  and Conflicts since 1775 A.D. 1. American Revolutionary War - 1775 to 1783 a) The thirteen American colonies, with a population of roughly 2.5 million, fight for secession from the British Empire. The United States of America was internationally recognized in 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris. War of 1812 b) The U.S. declares war on the United Kingdom over issues such as the British practice of forcing sailors to serve in the Royal Navy and the interception of neutral U.S. ships. 2. Mexican-American War - 1846 to 1848 a) Although the U.S. annexed Texas in 1845 it was unable to resolve a boundary disagreement with Mexico. Troops were deployed in Mexico by America in order to forestall a threatened invasion. 3. American Civil War - 1861 to 1865 a) Conflict fought between the U.S. and eleven states (known eventually as the Confederate States of America) over the right to secede from the Union. 4. Spanish-American War - 1898 a) The U.S. declares war against Spain after the sinking of the USS Maine. 5. World War I - 1917 - 1918 a) War declared against Germany due, in part, to its warfare against neutral U.S. shipping. 6. World War II - 1941 - 1945 a) War is declared against Japan after its bombing of Pearl Harbor in December, 1941. Germany soon after declared war against the U.S. 7. Korean War - 1950 to 1953 a) U.S. forces come to the aid of the South Koreans when North Korea invades the country. 8. Vietnam War - 1959 to 1975 9. Operation Desert Storm - 1991 a) The U.S. and its coalition partners and allies attack Iraqi forces after Iraq refuses to leave the country of Kuwait which it invaded. 10. Afghanistan War - 2001 a) The U.S. invades Afghanistan in order to find and bring to justice those who caused the 9/11 attacks. 11. Iraq War - 2003 to 2011 a) U.S. and coalition forces invade Iraq.
