Love in the Bible a) The New Testament, written in Greek, uses as least three different words that are translated as our English word 'love.' The first of these words is Agape, which is an unconditional love that flows out of a character built on loving. The second is Phileo, which is a brotherly or friendship type of love. The third word, Storgay, found only as a compound word, refers to loving one's relatives or loving someone in a familial-type of way. i) Hate stirs up trouble, but love forgives all offenses. (Proverbs 10:12) ii) 1 See how much the Father has loved us! His love is so great that we are called God’s children - and so, in fact, we are. This is why the world does not know us: it has not known God. 2 My dear friends, we are now God’s children . . . (1John 3:1-3) iii) 7. Beloved, we should love one another (especially among brethren) because love is from God . . . 8. The one who does not love does not know God because God is love. (1John 4:7-8)  iv) 15. Do not love the world, nor the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1John 2:15)
