The Source of Fear

Why Do We Fear?

We fear because we forget that God made us with His love. His love drives out, pushes away, and casts out all our tormenting thoughts and fears. Fear has to do with punishment. When we are afraid, we are acting as though God is against us, as though He is waiting to punish us. But the truth is that God is for us. He is not against us. He demonstrated His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. If fear has overtaken you, it may be a sign that you need to be reminded of God's perfect love. If you fear death, it may be because you are not fully assured of your position in Christ. But perfect love removes that fear and gives you confidence to face even death with hope.

What Is Perfect Love?

What then is perfect love? The word "perfect" means complete. Perfect love is the love of God that has been fully realized and received in our hearts. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God lives in them. This is how love is made complete among us. There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. When we allow God's love to fill us completely, there is no room left for fear. When we are fully convinced of His love for us, we are no longer afraid of rejection, punishment, or failure. His love gives us boldness, security, and peace.

Call to God and He will answer. Psalm 107:6 promises that when we cry out to the Lord, He delivers us from our distress. Live in God's love and let His love rule and be sovereign over your life so that fear will forever be cast away. This is not a one-time event; it is a daily choice. It is choosing to believe God's love over the enemy's lies. It is choosing to trust God's character over your circumstances. It is choosing to rest in His acceptance rather than striving for approval. As you live in His love, fear will lose its grip. His perfect love will cast out every fear.
