When You Wonder Why You Are Here : Acts 17:26–27
Acts 17:26–27
Key Bible Verse
"From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands. God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us."
Short Reflection
You know the 3 a.m. question. Why this body? Why this era? Why this family, this city, this job, this particular configuration of DNA and history that you did not choose and cannot escape? You feel like a cosmic accident, a misplaced punctuation mark in a sentence you did not write. You have read this passage like a map — God determined your times and boundaries, He placed you here for a reason, there must be a hidden purpose beneath the randomness. You have searched for it in your passions, your pain, your personality tests, your spiritual gifts inventories. You have made your life a detective story with yourself as the mystery.
You think your problem is that you cannot find the answer. You think God has hidden your purpose behind a curtain and your job is to pull it back. You think the boundaries of your life — the limits, the disappointments, the locked doors — are obstacles to understanding why you are here.
But stop.
You are not the philosopher seeking truth in the dark.
You are the criminal hiding from the light.
You think you are wondering why you are here. You are actually hoping He does not find you. "He marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands." You have read this as divine curation of your personal destiny. It is not. It is divine confinement of a fugitive. God did not place you in this specific body, this specific era, this specific set of limitations so you could discover your special purpose. He placed you here so you could not escape Him. Every boundary you resent — the job you hate, the body that fails you, the family that wounds you, the geography that bores you, the century you did not choose — is a wall keeping you in the arena where He is waiting. You are not lost. You are cornered.
And you know it.
"So that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him." You have spent your life seeking everything else. You have sought significance, identity, explanation, validation, romance, success, healing, closure. You have used your existential crisis as an excuse to stare in the mirror longer. You are not a deep soul tortured by the mystery of existence. You are a shallow one terrified that the answer might be devastatingly simple: you are here to be found by God. Not to find yourself. Not to fulfill your potential. Not to leave your mark. You are here to reach out for the One who is already near — and you have been refusing because reaching out means surrendering the center of the universe back to its rightful Owner.
"Though he is not far from any one of us." This is not comfort to the seeker. This is terror to the hider. He is close. He sees. He is right here, in the room where you are reading this, in the thoughts you think are private, in the motives you disguise even from yourself. You are not wondering why you are here. You are wondering if you can get away with living as if He is not.
And here is what God did with a fugitive like you: He sent the only Seeker who ever truly found Him.
Jesus lived within the exact boundaries God appointed — the right lineage, the right land, the right moment in history. He did not question why He was here. He knew. He was here to seek the Father in perfect obedience, to reach out in flawless trust, to inhabit His humanity entirely for the glory of God. He was the only one who was never hiding. And because He was never hiding, He became the target. On the cross, the Father treated Him as if He were the fugitive. "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" — the cry of infinite distance, of boundaries collapsed, of the One who was always near being cast into the outer darkness you earned. He was pushed to the farthest edge of grace so that you, the actual criminal, could be found inside it.
So stop asking why you are here. You are here because God is not far. He is right here. And the only thing standing between you and Him is your stubborn insistence that the question is about you.
What Does This Mean?
Your existential crisis is not a mystery to solve. It is an alibi you use to avoid the God who has already found you. God determined your boundaries not to give you a destiny but to corner you into seeking Him. Christ was cast out so you could be brought in.
How Does This Apply to Me?
Have I been using "finding my purpose" as a sophisticated way to avoid finding God?
What boundary have I resented that was actually God keeping me where I could be found?
Do I really want to know why I'm here, or do I want permission to keep running?
Have I treated my life like a mystery novel about me instead of a manhunt by the One who made me?
Am I willing to stop searching for significance and simply reach out for the God who is already near?
One Truth to Carry
You are not here to find yourself. You are here to be found by God. And the only reason you can reach for Him is that Christ was pushed away in your place.
Short Prayer
Lord, I have used my existence as an excuse for narcissism. I have asked why I'm here while running from the only Answer. Thank You that You placed me here not to fulfill my destiny but to find You. Thank You that Jesus was cast into the darkness I deserved so I could reach out and find You near. I stop searching for myself. I reach for You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
