MUSIC IN BIBLE TIMES (3)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) Paul clearly puts forth the Christian's view that things are not good or bad in and of themselves (see 1 Corinthians 14:7-8, 26).
@1. 7 Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? 8 For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? (1 Corinthians 14:7-8 NKJV)
@2. 26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. (1 Corinthians 14:26 NKJV)
b) The point should always be to worship the Lord or help others by means of the things of this world, including music. Music was created by God and can be returned to him in praise.
c) Does the music you play or listen to have a negative or positive impact upon your relationship with God?
1. What are the highlights of musical use in Scripture?
a) Saul experienced the soothing effect of music.
#i) Scripture text: 1 Samuel 16:14-23
@1. 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him. 15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Surely, a distressing spirit from God is troubling you. 16 Let our master now command your servants, who are before you, to seek out a man who is a skillful player on the harp. And it shall be that he will play it with his hand when the distressing spirit from God is upon you, and you shall be well.”
17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide me now a man who can play well, and bring him to me.”
18 Then one of the servants answered and said, “Look, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a mighty man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a handsome person; and the Lord is with him.”
19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.” 20 And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine, and a young goat, and sent them by his son David to Saul. 21 So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armor bearer. 22 Then Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Please let David stand before me, for he has found favor in my sight.” 23 And so it was, whenever the spirit from God was upon Saul, that David would take a harp and play it with his hand. Then Saul would become refreshed and well, and the distressing spirit would depart from him. (1 Samuel 16:14-23 NKJV)
b) The king's coronation was accompanied by music.
#i) Scripture text: 1 Kings 1:39-40
@1. 39 Then Zadok the priest took a horn of oil from the tabernacle and anointed Solomon. And they blew the horn, and all the people said, “Long live King Solomon!” 40 And all the people went up after him; and the people played the flutes and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth seemed to split with their sound. (1 Kings 1:39-40 NKJV)
c) The ark was accompanied by trumpeters.
#i) Scripture text: 1 Chronicles 16:6
@1. 6 Benaiah and Jahaziel the priests regularly blew the trumpets before the ark of the covenant of God. (1 Chronicles 16:6 NKJV)
