1 JOHN: THE BOOK OF CONTRASTS (1)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
0. Introduction
a) One of the distinct features of John's writing style was his habit of noting both sides of a conflict. He wrote to show the difference between real Christianity and anything else.
b) Here are some of his favorite contrasts.
1. Light and darkness
a) Text reference: 1 John 1:5
i) 5 This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. (1 John 1:5 NKJV)
2. The new commandment and the old commandment
a) Text reference: 1 John 2:7-8
i) 7 Brethren, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you have had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you heard from the beginning. 8 Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true light is already shining. (1 John 2:7-8 NKJV)
3. Loving the Father and loving the world
a) Text reference: 1 John 2:15-16
i) 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. (1 John 2:15-16 NKJV)
4. Christ and anti-Christ
a) Text reference: 1 John 2:18
i) 18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. (1 John 2:18 NKJV)
5. Truth and lies
a) Text reference: 1 John 2:20-21
i) 20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. (1 John 2:20-21 NKJV)
