1 JOHN: THE BOOK OF CONTRASTS (3)

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) One of the distinct features of John's writing style was his habit of noting both sides of a conflict. He wrote to show the difference between real Christianity and anything else.

b) Here are some of his favorite contrasts.

1. Eternal life and eternal death

a) Text reference: 1 John 3:14

i) 14 We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. (1 John 3:14 NKJV)

2. Love and hatred

a) Text reference: 1 John 3:15-16

i) 15 Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. (1 John 3:15-16 NKJV)

3. True teaching and false teaching

a) Text reference: 1 John 4:1-3

i) Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. 2 By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, 3 and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. (1 John 4:1-3 NKJV)

4. Love and fear

a) Text reference: 1 John 4:18-19

i) 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love. 19 We love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4:18-19 NKJV)

5. Having Lie and not having life

a) Text reference: 1 John 5:11-12

i) 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. (1 John 5:11-12 NKJV)
