Introduction

There is a subtle and dangerous trap that has ensnared countless believers. It is the trap of seeking the gifts instead of the Giver, the blessings instead of the Blesser, the miracles instead of the Miracle Worker. It is the tendency to pursue God for what He can do rather than for who He is. It is the temptation to treat God as a cosmic vending machine—insert prayer, insert faith, insert obedience, and out comes the blessing you requested. It is the reduction of a relationship with the living God to a transaction, a formula, a means to an end.

Jesus confronted this very issue after He miraculously fed the five thousand. The crowds were amazed. They had eaten their fill of the loaves and fish. They had witnessed a miracle. They had experienced supernatural provision. And so they followed Jesus. They sought Him out. They wanted more. But Jesus saw through their motives. He said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled." He believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6). Moses did not seek God for the miracles; he sought God for His presence. He said, "If Your Presence does not go with us, do not bring us up from here" (Exodus 33:15). David did not seek God for the blessings; he sought God for His face. He said, "One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in His temple" (Psalm 27:4). The pattern is clear: the people of God seek the Giver, not just the gifts. They seek the Blesser, not just the blessings. They seek the Miracle Worker, not just the miracle.

The example of Jesus is our ultimate model. Jesus did not perform miracles to attract crowds. He did not perform miracles to gain followers. He did not perform miracles to build a platform. He performed miracles to reveal the Father. He performed miracles to demonstrate His love. He performed miracles to meet needs. But He always pointed people beyond the miracle to Himself. Second, we treat God as a cosmic vending machine. We insert the right prayer, the right faith, the right obedience, and we expect the blessing to come out. We treat God as a formula, a transaction, a mechanism. We do not treat Him as a person. We do not treat Him as a Father. We do not treat Him as a King. We treat Him as a thing to be manipulated. But God is not a vending machine. He is not a formula. He is not a transaction. He is a person. He is a Father. He is a King. He is to be loved, worshiped, and adored.

Third, we labor for the food that perishes. We spend our lives chasing after the temporary. We strive for the fleeting. We toil for the things that will pass away. We pursue money, success, possessions, and pleasure. We pursue the things of this world that will not last. But Jesus said, "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life." We must not labor for the temporary. We must labor for the eternal. We must seek the things that will never fade.

Fourth, we focus on the miracle instead of the Miracle Worker. We are so focused on the blessing that we miss the Blesser. We are so focused on the provision that we miss the Provider. We are so focused on the answer that we miss the Answerer. We are so focused on the gift that we miss the Giver. We must lift our eyes. We must look beyond the miracle. We must see the Miracle Worker. We must see Jesus.

Fifth, we become disappointed when the miracle does not come. We become discouraged. We become bitter. We become angry. We question God's love. We question His goodness. We question His faithfulness. But our focus is wrong. We are focused on the miracle, not on the Miracle Worker. If we are focused on the Miracle Worker, we will not be disappointed, even if the miracle does not come. Because the Miracle Worker is enough. His presence is enough. His love is enough. He is enough.

Sixth, we forget that God is the reward. We think that the reward is the blessing. We think that the reward is the miracle. We think that the reward is the provision. But God Himself is the reward. He said to Abraham, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward" (Genesis 15:1). God is the reward. Not the things He gives. Not the miracles He performs. Not the blessings He bestows. Him. He is the treasure. He is the prize. He is the reward.

Seventh, we lose sight of the eternal. We are so focused on the temporary that we lose sight of the eternal. We are so focused on the here and now that we forget about the there and then. We are so focused on the things of this world that we neglect the things of the next. We must fix our eyes on the eternal. We must seek the things that are above. We must set our minds on things above, not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2).

God's Perspective

God views your pursuit of the gifts as a misplaced affection. He wants you to pursue Him, not just what He can give you. He wants you to love Him, not just His blessings. He wants you to seek Him, not just His miracles. He wants to be your first love. He wants to be your primary pursuit. He wants to be your ultimate treasure. He is jealous for your affection. He will not share your heart with the gifts He gives.

God's perspective is that He is the greatest gift. The greatest gift He can give you is not a miracle. It is not a blessing. It is not a provision. It is not a breakthrough. It is not an answer to prayer. The greatest gift He can give you is Himself. He gives you His presence. He gives you His love. He gives you His fellowship. He gives you His Kingdom. He gives you His righteousness. He gives you His Son. He gives you Himself. And that is the greatest gift of all.

God sees your labor for the temporary as a waste of your life. He does not want you to spend your life chasing after things that will perish. He does not want you to toil for the fleeting. He does not want you to strive for the things that will pass away. He wants you to labor for the eternal. He wants you to invest in the lasting. He wants you to seek the things that will never fade. He wants you to build your life on the foundation that will never crumble. He wants you to store up treasures in heaven, not on earth (Matthew 6:19-20).

God's perspective is that He will provide for your needs. You do not have to chase after the things of this world. You do not have to labor for the food that perishes. You do not have to worry about your provision. Your heavenly Father knows what you need. He sees your situation. He cares about your struggles. He will provide. He will take care of you. He will not abandon you. He is faithful. He is good. He is your Provider. Seek first the Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.

God sees your focus on the miracle as a distraction from the Miracle Worker. The miracle is meant to point you to the Miracle Worker. The blessing is meant to point you to the Blesser. God's perspective is that He is the reward. He is not just the one who gives the reward. He is the reward. He is not just the one who answers the prayer. He is the answer. He is not just the one who provides the blessing. He is the blessing. He is not just the one who performs the miracle. He is the miracle. He is everything. He is all in all. He is the Alpha and the Omega. He is the Beginning and the End. He is the First and the Last. He is the reward. Seek Him. And you will find that He is more than enough.

Practical Application

Examine Your Motives: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal your motives. Ask Him to show you why you are seeking God. Are you seeking Him for who He is, or for what He can do? Are you seeking Him for the relationship, or for the benefits? Are you seeking the Miracle Worker, or only the miracle? Be honest with yourself. Be honest with God. And then repent of any misplaced motives.

Seek God for Himself: Make it your aim to seek God for Himself. Not for His gifts. Not for His blessings. Not for His miracles. But for Him. Seek His face. Seek His presence. Seek His fellowship. Seek His love. Seek His Kingdom. Seek His righteousness. Seek Him. Just Him. He is enough.

Prioritize the Kingdom: Make the Kingdom of God your first priority. Seek it first. Pursue it first. Prioritize it first. When you seek first the Kingdom, everything else falls into place. "But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33). Make God your first pursuit. Make His Kingdom your first priority. And watch Him provide for your needs.

Labor for the Eternal: Do not labor for the food that perishes. Do not spend your life chasing after the temporary. Labor for the food that endures to everlasting life. Invest in what lasts. Invest in eternity. Invest in the Kingdom. Invest in people. Invest in your relationship with God. These are the things that will never fade.

Focus on the Miracle Worker: When you are tempted to focus on the miracle, redirect your focus to the Miracle Worker. When you are tempted to focus on the blessing, redirect your focus to the Blesser. When you are tempted to focus on the gift, redirect your focus to the Giver. Keep your eyes on Jesus. He is the author and finisher of your faith. He is the one who performs the miracles. He is the one who gives the blessings. He is the one who provides the gifts. Focus on Him.

Be Satisfied in Him: Learn to be satisfied in God alone. Not in His gifts. Not in His blessings. Not in His miracles. But in Him. He is enough. His presence is enough. His love is enough. His grace is enough. His mercy is enough. His faithfulness is enough. He is enough. Be satisfied in Him.

Trust His Provision: Do not worry about your needs. Do not be anxious about provision. Trust God to provide. He knows what you need. He has promised to take care of you. He feeds the birds. He clothes the lilies. He will take care of you. Release your anxiety to Him. Trust His faithfulness. Rest in His provision. Seek first the Kingdom, and all these things will be added to you.
