TEN (10) VIRGINS

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Story of 10 virgins

i) 1“At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Five of them were foolish and five were wise. 3 The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take any oil with them. 4 The wise ones, however, took oil in jars along with their lamps. 5 The bridegroom was a long time in coming, and they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
6 “At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here’s the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’ 7 “Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps. 8 The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’ 9 “‘No,’ they replied, ‘there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’ 10 “But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut. 11 “Later the others also came. ‘Lord, Lord,’ they said, ‘open the door for us!’ 12 “But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I don’t know you.’ 13 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour. (Matthew 25:1-13 NIV)

1. What is the story all about?

#1) Be ready at all time

a) In this story, we are taught that every person is responsible for his or her own spiritual condition. The story is about a wedding. On the wedding day the bridegroom went to the bride's house for ceremony; then the bride and groom, along with a great procession, returned to the groom's house where a feast took place, often lasting a full week.

b) The 10 virgins were waiting to join the procession, and they hope to take part in the wedding banquet. But when the groom didn't come at the expected time, five of them ran out of lamp oil. By the time they had purchased extra oil, it was too late to join the feast.

c) When Jesus returns to take his people to heaven, we must be ready. Spiritual preparation cannot be bought or borrowed at the last minute. Our relationship with God must be our own.

i) 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare. (2 Peter 3:10 NIV)

2. Prayer focus

a) Are we ready when the Lord comes unexpectedly? Pray that we will ever be ready for his unannounced soon coming and not acting like the 5 foolish virgins that ran out of lamp oil and was too late for his coming.

The End ...
