WHY SICKNESS? (2)
(Message by Tanny Keng)
1. Sickness as a consequence of man's sin
a) When Adam and Eve sinned in the beginning, the consequence was death, and with death came the deterioration of life and its quality; pain, sorrow, sickness etc. came into being.
#1) Sickness due to the sin of disobedience to God's law and commandments
i) 58 If you do not carefully follow all the words of this law, which are written in this book, and do not revere this glorious and awesome name—the Lord your God— 59 the Lord will send fearful plagues on you and your descendants, harsh and prolonged disasters, and severe and lingering illnesses. 60 He will bring on you all the diseases of Egypt that you dreaded, and they will cling to you. 61 The Lord will also bring on you every kind of sickness and disaster not recorded in this Book of the Law, until you are destroyed. (Deuteronomy 28:58-61 NIV)
ii) The Scripture described disobedience to God's commandments as sin (1 John 3:4) and sin has its consequences.
@1. 4 Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. (1 John 3:4 NIV)
iii) Many times Scripture just refers to these consequences of sin as curses. Just as Deuteronomy 28:15 NIV says, "15If you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you." Sickness is one of the curses of disobedience."
#2) Sickness due to the sin of sexual defilements (see Leviticus 18 &20)
i) These sins of sexual defilement are also called sinning against your body.
@1. 18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18 NIV)
ii) The list includes fornications, incest, adultery, bestiality, homosexuality and other forms of sexual perversions. These laws against sexual defilements were not issued by an angry God who want to limit our pleasure, but from a Designer who loves us and knows what lifestyle is best for us.
iii) 24 “Do not defile yourselves in any of these ways, because this is how the nations that I am going to drive out before you became defiled. 25 Even the land was defiled; so I punished it for its sin, and the land vomited out its inhabitants." (Leviticus 18:24-25 NIV)
iv) Sexual defilements bring along with it much diseases; AIDS, STD, syphilis, cancer, insanity etc. For example, the syphilis epidemic that ravaged Europe during the 1600s resulted in the death of 50% of the population in some cities. One group, however, the Puritans were protected from this scourge by forcing strict standard against adultery.
v) Peter Lewin, an epidemiologist from Canada, believes that the AIDS virus was introduced to human by bestiality. Although HIV virus is present in sheep, monkeys, pigs, and cats, the animal themselves usually remain without symptoms-transmission to humans occurs by eating the flesh or bestiality.
vi) Beastiality is considered an abomination punishable by death (Leviticus 20:15-16). Was God cruel to punish these ancient peoples for such defilements or would he be crueler to let this kind of activity go unchecked, leading to the possible deaths of millions through AIDS.
@1. 15 “If a man has sexual relations with an animal, he is to be put to death, and you must kill the animal. 16 “f a woman approaches an animal to have sexual relations with it, kill both the woman and the animal. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." (Leviticus 20:15-16 NIV)
vii) We see God's judgment upon people who commits sexual defilement through various diseases. There are more than 26 highly contagious diseases that are passed through homosexual activity. Furthermore the average lifespan of homosexuals are only around 43 years old.
viii) God commanded, "19 Do not approach a woman to have sexual relations during the uncleanness of her monthly period." (Leviticus 18:19 NIV and "18 If a man has sexual relations with a woman during her monthly period, he has exposed the source of her flow, and she has also uncovered it. Both of them are to be cut off from their people." (Leviticus 20:18 NIV)
ix) Modern research has discovered that a woman is much more susceptical to infections during her monthly period. Parents who lived in sin and moral impurity will also pass on to their children ill health and a weak body that is susceptible to diseases.
#3) Sickness due to partaking Holy Communion without proper self-examination and repentance
i) 30 That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. 31 But if we were more discerning with regard to ourselves, we would not come under such judgment. 32 Nevertheless, when we are judged in this way by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be finally condemned with the world. (1 Corinthians 11:30-32 NIV)
#4) Sins that caused shortened lifespan
i) 12 “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you." (Exodus 20:12 NIV)
ii) 27 The fear of the Lord adds length to life, but the years of the wicked are cut short. (Proverbs 10:27 NIV)
iii) 15 You must have accurate and honest weights and measures, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (Deuteronomy 25:15 NIV)
iv) Obedience to God, following his commandments will cause us to be blessed and this includes a healthy long life, so that we can fulfill all of God's purpose in our lives and to serve our children's children.
