LOVE YOUR ENEMIES

(Message by Tanny Keng)

0. Introduction

a) Loving your enemies

i) 43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:43-48 NIV)

1. What is "loving your enemies" all about?

a) By telling us not to retaliate, Jesus keeps us from taking the law into our own hands. By loving and praying for our enemies, we can overcome evil with good.

b) The Pharisees interpreted Leviticus 19:18 as teaching that they should love only those who love in return, and Psalms 139:19-22 and Psalms 140:9-11 as meaning that they should hate their enemies.

i) 18 “‘Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. (Leviticus 19:18 NIV)

ii) 19 If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! 20 They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. 21 Do I not hate those who hate you, Lordand abhor those who are in rebellion against you? 22 I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies. (Psalms 139:19-22 NIV)

iii) 9 Those who surround me proudly rear their heads; may the mischief of their lips engulf them. 10 May burning coals fall on them; may they be thrown into the fire, into miry pits, never to rise. 11 May slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down the violent. (Psalms 140:9-11 NIV)

c) But Jesus says we are to love our enemies. If you love your enemies and treat them well, you will truly show that Jesus is Lord of your life. This is possible only for thosewho give themselves fully to God, because only he can deliver people from natural selfishness. We must trust the Holy Spirit to help us whow love to those for whom we may not feel love. Is this possible? Yes, try it with Jesus.

d) Jesus tells us to be perfect like our heavenly Father. We can be perfect if our behaviour is appropriate for our maturity level - perfect, yet with much room to grow. Our tendency to sin must never deter us from striving to be more like Christ. Christ calls all of his disciples to excel, to rise above mediocrity, and to mature in every area, becoming like him. Those who strive to become perfect will one day be perfect, even as Christ is perfect.

i) 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure. (1 John 3:2-3 NIV)

2. Prayer focus

a) Pray that we will continue to love our enemies as Jesus has said. Leave everything to God. God will know how to act on your behalf on the condition that we obey his word.

The End ...
